Ok I admit it, the day after Thanksgiving I let the Christmas decor come out and take over- wreaths, ornaments, runners, etc. I just love Christmas decor and every year I inevitably add something new including a few handmade items. This year I thought some fun snowman candle jars would be festive for the guest bathroom as well as a few to light up my walk on Christmas Eve. I also happen to love a kid friendly craft project and my son was able to do everything but the hot glue. That makes this holiday craft a winner! We are planning to make one Snowman Candle Mason Jar for each of his teachers and grandma too as DIY gifts.
Gather up some supplies, grab a mug of cocoa, and let’s get to crafting some candle jars!
How To Make A Snowman Candle Jar
Snowman Candle Holder Craft Supplies:
- smooth empty jar (pint size works well)
- epsom salt
- ribbon
- black buttons
- orange chenille stem or pipe cleaner
- school glue or Modge Podge
- foam brush
- hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
You will also need a candle to so inside if you wish to light it up. I used a small tea light candle. However, you could also use a battery operated votive candle. You could even insert candle wicks and pour melted wax inside for a DIY candle. All of these materials should be easy to find at your local craft store during the holiday season.
Snowman Candle Jar Craft Step By Step Directions:
Grab a glass jar, you don’t want an actual mason jar here because you want a smooth surface for your DIY snowman candle holder. A spaghetti jar or pickle jar is perfect for this project. Or you can get some plain jars at your the Dollar Tree.
Paint jar from neck down with a thick coat of glue.
Immediately roll jar in epsom salt to coat, add a bit more glue and salt if need to coat fully.
The next step is to allow glue to dry for 1-2 hours.
Wrap ribbon around base of jar for a scarf, tie it off, and secure in several places with hot glue.
Cut off a 2” length of chenille stem, bend in half, twist and bend one end perpendicular so you have a larger surface to glue down and keep it secure. Attach with a generous amount of hot glue for the carrot nose.
Hot glue buttons for eyes and a mouth on your snowman to finish him off.
Drop in a tea light and he is ready to light up your mantle, walkway, or anywhere else that can use a touch of winter cheer.
Conclusion
Do you enjoy a white Christmas during the winter months where you live? This is a cozy, feel good craft to warm your heart.
I hope you enjoy making snowman candle jars for your holiday decor. They will look great as part of your Christmas table decor. Do you think you will make this perfect winter craft with your family? What are your favorite Christmas crafts?

Just made these with preschoolers. The hot glue didn’t stick to the epsom salt. They just popped right off when they got bumped and with kids they are going to get bumped. I ended up taking all the hot glued buttons off and re-glued them with e6000. That seems to be holding better. While I was researching what glue to use, I came across some info that says the epsom salts won’t stay nice…they will change after a few days of being out in the open. She said if you paint it, they will stay nice, so I gave each snowman a coat of spray polyurethane. Hoping it works. Thanks for the great idea 🙂 They turned out cute!
