This watercolor banner is a fun art craft for kids. First, they get to work on a creative art project and then they get to craft a fun way to display their art! I have stacks of my children’s artwork in a pile in our garage. I recently found my circular punch and decided to let them display some of their watercolor artwork by turning it into a decorative watercolor banner. Try this fun kids watercolor tutorial the next time your child wants to break out the watercolor paints.

Fun Art Craft For Kids: Watercolor Banner Tutorial

Most kids love to paint, color, and draw. It is such a great way for them to express their creativity and become more dexterous all at the same time. This kids watercolor tutorial is so fun because they tend to be quite prolific with their watercolor paintings and making a banner out of them provides a great way to display the piles of simple artwork young children tend to produce. This homemade watercolor banner could also be called a watercolor pennant or DIY watercolor bunting or water color garland. Call it what you will, it makes great decoration for the child’s room or even DIY colorful decoration for an upcoming party.

Art & Craft Supplies Needed For This Kids Watercolor Project

  • Watercolor Paints
  • Watercolor Paper (any paper will do but watercolor specific paper works the best because it is thicker and will ripple less)
  • Paint Brush
  • Jar of Water
  • Circle Punch or Circular Object To Trace Circles and Scissors
  • String or ribbon (for hanging watercolor banner)
  • Tape

How To Make A Watercolor Banner With Kids Watercolor Paintings:

First, gather your art craft supplies and let your child grab a seat at the table. Next, let them paint! There’s no specific pattern to make or color to use. It’s all up to what your child feels like making! I love to use water colors too so I joined in and colored a sheet as well.

They can use watercolor paints to create whole sheets of their favorite colors or work on blending the colors to learn about mixing colors to create new colors and gradients of colors. If you have older children, they may even want to try experiment with more advanced watercolor techniques.

Your children can paint as many sheets as they would like in as many styles as they like.

I got about 13 circles from each piece of paper and made two 13 circle banners. Once your water color sheets are dry, (this only takes a few minutes) start cutting or punching your circles out! The kids can definitely help with this one. I let my 2 year old help me with the circular punch (affiliate amazon link). Just use proper care and supervision.

Once your circles are punched out, take your string and tape the back side of the circles to your string leaving about an inch between each new circle.

I used washi tape to hold my circles onto my string but any tape you have around your house will do just fine. When you have your circles taped, you have officially made Water Color Banner!

How To Display Children’s Watercolor Art

This is such a fun art craft for kids because they get all the creative element of free art design and some of the structured element of crafting with a purpose. It is also a great way to display you child’s art.

Let you child decide where they’d like to hang up their watercolor project. The DIY Watercolor Banner definitely adds beautiful colors to any room in your house!

Conclusion

Watercolor painting is great for kids because it’s easy to use, mess-friendly, and encourages creativity. It also helps develop fine motor skills, patience, and an appreciation for color mixing. Since watercolors are forgiving and blendable, they allow kids to experiment without feeling pressured to make everything perfect. Watercolor painting is such fun! Holding brushes, controlling water, and making strokes improve dexterity. Kids learn how colors mix and interact naturally.

Do you think your child would enjoy this art craft for kids? This kids watercolor tutorial is so easy and it makes such great lasting watercoloring decorations. Give this fun artistic activity a try the next time your child wants to paint!
