A bit about these Acne Face Mask ingredients-
Aloe vera gel forms the basis of this DIY Face Mask for acne because it has so many healing properties. Aloe vera is great for those with acne because it contains healing and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce skin inflammation and allow the skin to heal quickly and naturally with minimal scarring.
The essential oils in this recipe were chosen for their antiseptic and healing properties:
- Palmarosa essential oil has antiseptic and bactericidal properties. It is very hydrating and is a wonderful oil for your face.
- According to Dr. Axe, “Frankincense essential oil is a powerful astringent, meaning it helps protect skin cells. It can be used to help reduce acne blemishes, the appearance of large pores, prevent wrinkles, and it even helps lift and tighten skin to naturally slow signs of aging.” It also stimulates new cell growth and regulates oil production.
- Melrose essential oil helps with tissue regeneration and may speed healing.
This aloe vera and essential oil face mask is already a soothing, antibacterial, and skin-healing blend—great for calming acne-prone skin. To enhance its benefits, Here are a couple of optional ingredients based on your skin’s needs:
Optional Add-ins And Their Benefits:
- Kaolin or Bentonite Clay (1 tsp): Gently draws out impurities, absorbs excess oil, and tightens pores—ideal for oily or acne-prone skin.
- Witch Hazel (a few drops): Acts as a natural astringent and helps tone skin while reducing redness and oil.
How To Make A DIY Face Mask For Acne
Grab your supplies and head to the kitchen counter. Start by measuring out 1 TBSP of aloe vera gel into a small glass mixing bowl. Next, add your essential oils. Add 1 drop of Palmarosa, 1 drop of Melrose, and 1 drop of Frankincense. If you are using one of the optional items suggested above, add it in now as well.
Instead of stirring everything together with a spoon, I just take a finger (a clean finger!) and mix everything together that way. I do that so none of the oils will stick to the spoon. Once it is well mixed, your mask is ready to use!
To Apply DIY Mask:
Always patch test before applying essential oils to your face.
You want to apply a generous layer over your face- making sure to avoid eyes and mouth. Once you have applied your gel face mask, sit back and relax. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. For sensitive skin or first-time use, start with 5–7 minutes. Then, gently wipe off mask with a warm washcloth.
Follow with your daily moisturizer if doing mask in the morning or apply your evening moisturizer afterwards if doing the mask at night. You may feel a little tingling and that’s normal! Recommended use is once per week.
Conclusion
Using a homemade mask made with simple ingredients is a gentle and effective way to care for irritated or oily skin. DIY masks like this not only help exfoliate dead skin cells but also deliver antibacterial properties that can support clearer, healthier skin. Unlike some commercial facial masks, this natural blend soothes without harsh chemicals, helping to calm inflammation and promote a natural glow. With consistent use, your skin can feel more balanced, refreshed, and nourished—all thanks to the power of a thoughtfully crafted DIY routine.
Why This DIY Face Mask Works:
- Aloe vera soothes and hydrates, making it a great carrier.
- Palmarosa helps balance oil and promotes cell regeneration.
- Melrose (a blend often containing tea tree and rosemary) is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory—great for acne.
- Frankincense supports healing and calms redness.
DIY acne masks are not only cost-effective but also fresher and cleaner, as you control exactly what goes into them. They’re free from preservatives and synthetic fragrances that can clog pores or cause reactions. Making your own masks also promotes a more mindful, eco-friendly skincare routine, reducing packaging waste and encouraging intentional self-care. It’s a natural, empowering way to support clearer skin and overall well-being.

I love these DIY face mask ideas—sometimes it’s nice to use simple, natural ingredients! I used to struggle a lot with acne and redness, and while home remedies helped a bit, I eventually decided to see a dermatologist for more lasting results. I went to WOW Medical Center in Dubai for dermatology and cosmetology treatments, and it made such a difference for my skin over time. I still use gentle DIY masks occasionally for maintenance, but having professional guidance really gave me confidence in my skincare routine.
