These last few days I have been putting away the fall decorations and getting out the winter and Christmas decor. Do you remember the Rustic FALL sign I made? Instead of putting that sign away, I turned the board over and turned it into two sided rustic wood Christmas decorations that can be used for Fall and Christmas. I just love the look of Christmas trees painted on wood- so simple and yet so beautiful. This DIY rustic Christmas decor is simple to make and will be pretty on display for the next month.
Gold Tree On Wood Rustic Christmas Decor
Rustic Christmas decorations are popular for several reasons:
- Cozy and Warm Ambiance: Rustic decor emphasizes natural materials like wood, burlap, and twine, creating a warm, inviting, and homey atmosphere that’s perfect for the holiday season.

DIY Wooden Christmas Decor Craft Supplies:
- Wooden Board – Mine is a piece of barn wood I used for my Fall Sign
- Gold Paint
- Paint Brush
- Twine
- White Ceramic Star Ornament
- Hot Glue and Glue Gun
When painting wood for crafts with metallic paint, choosing the right type ensures durability, adhesion, and a smooth finish. I use acrylic metallic paints because they are water-based, non-toxic, quick-drying, and versatile. They adhere well to wood and come in a wide variety of metallic finishes, including gold, silver, copper, and more. Acrylic paint is also inexpensively priced. You could use oil-based paints if you already have them on hand. They offer rich color and a smooth, durable finish. However, they take longer to dry and require proper ventilation during application.
How To Make Rustic Christmas Decorations:
Begin by painting a wide gold line down the center of the board. I made my line about 3/8″ wide and kept it about 6″ from the top of the board. I wanted there to be plenty of room at the top of the board for the star. The line does not need to be perfectly straight or even. Remember this is a rustic christmas tree decor sign so it should be natural and artistic (no ruler needed).
Once the center line is painted onto the board, begin painting the “boughs” onto your tree. These should be about the same thickness as the center line. Again, this should be artistic and not necessarily even or perfect. Paint the boughs on each side of the center until you are about 6″ from the bottom.
I also used a little bit of gold paint on the edges of the board to add a little sparkle.
After the paint is dry tie the star on with twine. I wrapped several layers of twine around the board to add a little more decorative touch. I had a couple of holes in my barn wood that were perfect for feeding the twine through. You could use a gold ribbon if you wanted instead of the twine to add a bit more sparkle.
I used a tiny bit of hot glue on the back of the star to hold it into place.
