My kids love things that glow. I don’t know what the fascination is…string lights, candles, our fireplace, their glow pets…all “cool” to them! In honor of their love for all things glowing, I’ve got a really fun and simple snowman craft for kids. You probably have everything that you already need in your craft box or laying around the house to make this DIY lantern snowman for your “glow loving” kids!

Cute Snowman Lanterns Craft Tutorial

Making snowman lanterns is a fun and creative craft that offers many benefits. Crafting snowman lanterns allows you to showcase your creativity through design, colors, and decorations. Snowman lanterns bring a festive, wintery feel to your home, enhancing the holiday spirit. It can also be a chance to teach kids about light, shadows, and seasonal themes while they have fun.

Snowman Mason Jar Craft Supplies Needed:

  • Mason Jar
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush
  • White Tissue Paper
  • Orange Construction Paper (for the carrot nose)
  • Black Construction Paper (or googly eyes)
  • Glue Stick
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Fuzzy Balls (aka pom poms)
  • Scissors
  • Battery Operated Tea Light Candle (not pictured)

These snowman lantern crafts use recycled or inexpensive materials, making them a sustainable and affordable decoration option. Easy snowman crafts are a great way to get in the spirt of this holiday season. Plus, kids of all ages love snowman craft ideas. So, let’s get started!

How To Make A Mason Jar Snowman Lantern Craft:

First start with your mason jar and your Mod Podge. Spread your Mod Podge in a thin layer over half of the jar. Take your white tissue paper and rip in into small pieces. They do not need to be uniform! Start laying and gently pressing them into the layer of Mod Podge that you brushed on. Once you have covered that half, do the same thing on the other half of the jar. After you have covered the whole jar with your tissue paper, go back with a little Mod Podge on your brush and pat down any pieces of tissue paper that might be sticking up.

Next, cut out some eyes and small circles for the mouth of the snowman from your black construction paper. Cut out a small triangular nose from your orange piece of paper. Go ahead and lay those on your jar while your Mod Podge is wet. If it has already dried, brush a little where you want your construction paper pieces to go. It will dry clear so don’t worry if you brush too large of an area!

Easy Peasy so far right?! Pop a battery operated candle inside the jar and turn it on. All that is left is making the ear muffs for your snowman. Place the flat lid on top of the jar. Cut your pipe cleaner to the size that you want. Place your pipe cleaner on the outside of your jar on the rim. Then screw the lid rim on and it will help hold the “ear muff headband” in place. Lastly, glue one puffy ball on each side of the lid ring to serve as the “ear muffs”. Voila…you have a Snowman Lantern!

If you haven’t had any snow yet this winter season, this cute snowman craft is a wonderful way to engage the kids with winter fun.

Important– Remind young kids that this snowman craft for kids uses a mason jar which is made out of glass so they should not carry or transport the lantern around without you.

DIY Snowman Lantern Conclusion

For kids, this craft activity helps improve fine motor skills through cutting, gluing, and painting. It’s an excellent activity to do with kids for family bonding time. It encourages teamwork and quality time together. Furthermore, these homemade lanterns add a personal touch to your holiday décor, making your space unique and cozy.

My kids keep their DIY kids lantern in their rooms but you can place these anywhere. Be sure you are using a battery operated candle so that you don’t have to worry about a fire hazard or anyone burning themselves! Have you made a lantern from a mason jar before? Give these wintery snowman crafts for kids a try. I bet your kids will love making their own DIY lantern!
