Fun Spider Crafts Tutorial

A spider craft can be a fun, creative activity with several benefits, especially for kids. Here’s why it might be a great idea:

  1. Motor Skills Development: Making spider crafts often involves cutting, gluing, and arranging materials, which can help improve fine motor skills—something that can be especially beneficial if you’re working on motor skills with children.
  2. Educational Opportunities: A spider craft can lead to interesting conversations about arachnids, their roles in the ecosystem, and how they contribute to controlling pests. It can also be a way to address fears and help kids see spiders as interesting rather than scary.
  3. Seasonal Fun: During Halloween or fall, spider crafts fit in perfectly with the seasonal theme, adding a festive touch to decorations or giving kids a way to get involved in seasonal activities.
  4. Encourages Creativity: A spider craft allows kids to use their imaginations, adding their own personal touches, colors, and even personalities to their spider creations.
  5. Sensory Engagement: Working with various craft materials (felt, paper, pom-poms, googly eyes) provides a sensory experience, which can be calming and help with focus, especially in younger kids or those who may benefit from hands-on learning.

Craft Supplies Needed for your Halloween Spider Craft:

  • Scissors
  • Tape or Glue (glue stick or school glue)
  • Wiggle Eyes (AKA googly eyes)
  • Construction Paper or Scrapbook Paper (black paper would be most traditional but the kids can have fun with any color for the spider’s body)
  • Black pipe cleaners (optional but they can be used in place of paper strips for the legs)

These are all simple craft supplies you may already have on hand!

How To Craft A Spider Hat:

To get started on this fun craft, grab your supplies and head to the table.

Measure around your child’s head then measure that same length out on your piece of paper. We had to glue two strips of paper together to make our band the perfect size to fit around my child’s head. We made the body of our Halloween spider pretty tall…probably about 3 inches wide. You definitely want a nice fat size band for your spider legs to connect to.

Once you have got the band measured and the ends are glued together, cut eight strips out. We just cut strips the length of our paper. They can be thin or wide. It really is up to you. Next, glue or tape (we found taping to be easier for this part) your legs to the head band. 4 legs on each side. Make sure to not put any in the front or they will be in your child’s eyes while he/she is wearing the hat. Or you could use pipe cleaner spider legs if you prefer. Once the legs are taped, it’s time for the final touches…adding the eyes!

Fun fact- most spiders have 8 eyes.  The googly eyes help add extra silliness to the hat. My kiddos wanted to glue 5 eyes on our spider! So that’s what we did. Once you have the eyes glued on, your Silly Halloween Spider Hat is ready to wear!

Fun Spider Facts

Here are a few fun spider facts to go with the fun spider craft:

  • They’re Helpful Gardeners: Spiders are natural pest controllers! They eat many insects, including mosquitoes, flies, and agricultural pests. Without spiders, our ecosystems—and even crop yields—could be seriously impacted.
  • Blue Blood: Spiders have blue blood! Instead of hemoglobin, which gives our blood a red color, spiders have hemocyanin, which contains copper and turns blue when it binds with oxygen.
  • Silk Strength: Spider silk is incredibly strong—five times stronger than steel of the same thickness! Some spiders can spin multiple types of silk, each with a unique purpose, like capturing prey or building webs.

Easy Spider Craft Conclusion

This is a fun Halloween craft but it is actually fun any time of the year, especially if you happen to be ready children’s books about spiders or doing any educational spider activities. These paper spider crafts are a fun way for preschool aged children to improve their fine motor skills as they practice cutting and gluing. Plus, it is so much fun for little hands to get to make a 3 d paper spiders. Do you think your child would enjoy making these cute spider crafts?
