Summer has arrived and it is fun to get outdoors for summer family activities but the heat is here! One of the things that my kids love to do in the summer to cool off is play with water! Whether it’s swimming at the pool, squirting each other with water squirters or tossing around water balloons, it’s fun to get wet and stay cool on those hot summer days! Here is a fun addition to those awesome water games: Homemade Kids Sponge Balls! They are so so easy to make and my kids absolutely love them. You could even make a few targets and have your child aim for those and they’ll get a little wet while throwing their Water Sponge Bombs!
Homemade Sponge Balls DIY Tutorial
Ready for this fun craft? Let’s make sponge water bombs! These splash balls make a great outdoor game for kids of all ages. Sponge balls are made with simple supplies like soft sponges, scissors, and rubber bands or string. They’re easy to create at home and make a fun, reusable alternative to water balloons for outdoor play.
DIY Sponge Balls Craft Supplies Needed:
- (1) 4 pack of colorful sponges (you can get cheap ones at the dollar store)
- A pair of scissors
- Hair Elastics or small rubber bands
How To Make Water Sponge Balls:
Gather your supplies and head to the kitchen counter or spread out on the floor. Start by taking one of your sponges and cutting it length wise into 4 separate long strips. Do this to all 4 sponges. You will end up with 16 sponge strips ( these will make 2 sponge koosh balls).
Next take 8 of your strips. Grab whichever different colors of sponges you would like! Place 4 sponge strips side by side and then stack four more on top of the bottom four.
After you have your 8 strips stacked, grab one of the hair elastics. Pick up your sponges by squeezing them in the middle and wrap the hair elastic around the sponge twice. You want it to be tight so that your sponges don’t come loose. If you need to, you can gently pull your sponges in different directions to help separate them.
And now you have fun Sponge Water Balls! Grab a couple of buckets of water and let the fun begin.
These simple sponge balls really hold up to water fights with my rough and tough kids! And they do a great job of keeping my kids busy playing outdoors in nature. These splash balls are such a fun way to pass a hot summer day.
