Before my son entered Kindergarten I had no clue what sight words were. I had heard my other momma friends who have older elementary school age children talk about them. However, I always wondered, “What are they talking about?” Well, when he went off to kindergarten, we got the list! You know what I’m talking about (if you have kindergarten or older kiddos). We got the kindergarten sight word list! I wanted to make learning more fun for him so we play this fun kindergarten sight words game scavenger hunt. Your kids will love it!
Sight words, also known as high-frequency words, are common words that appear frequently in texts and often do not follow typical phonetic or spelling rules. These words are taught to early readers to help them quickly recognize them by sight, without needing to sound them out.
Tutorial For Kindergarten Sight Words Games
Sight words are basically just commonly used words. For example: he, she, the, that…etc. They are words that your child will see over and over in books and around their classroom. So starting at a young age, kids are encouraged to learn and memorize these words. This Sight Word Scavenger Search Game is just a fun way to practice sight words! If your child is bored just sitting a the table reciting his/her words over and over, mix it up! Create this fun kindergarten sight words game to play! You could have a reward for finding and saying them all correctly or just play for sheer fun. Whatever you would like to do.
Materials Needed for Sight Word Scavenger Search:
- index cards
- marker
- tape
- dot markers (optional)
How To Make A Kindergarten Sight Words Scavenger Hunt Game:
Grab your index cards and your marker. If you are familiar with sight words, go ahead and write down the ones that you would like for your child to practice. One word per card. You can even let your child write the words (for writing practice). If you are not familiar with sight words, you can simply search “sight words” in your search engine. You will see several lists of common sight words pop up for you to use.
Once you have written a handful or two of sight word index cards, grab your tape. Proceed to tape the cards up around the house to create the kindergarten sight words game scavenger hunt. Try taping up 5 cards in each room. This way they know how many cards are out there to find and they don’t stop looking too early. You may want to group the cards as another fun learning activity. For example, the color sight words room, the numbers sight words room, etc.
Bonus ideas for sight word games:
Separate out the sight word number cards. Have your kids use a dot marker and put the correct number of dots on the back of the word card. A little extra game of counting!
Be creative and put extra fun hints on the back sides of other cards. For example, a drawing of a boy on the back of “he”.
How To Play:
Once the cards are all distributed, it’s time for the scavenger search!! Let your child see how many they can find. Keep a pile for the words they got right on the first try and the words that needed more work. Then when you play again, make sure to reuse some of the ones they got right and all of the ones they got wrong. This will help to keep them encouraged and give them a chance to get them right that time.
