If there is one thing that kids love, it’s bubbles! I have never met a child that didn’t like to blow, chase or catch bubbles. There’s just something so fun about them. We can easily go through a large bottle of bubbles in one afternoon. We really like to make our own homemade bubble solution with a few simple ingredients instead of using store bought. No more plastic bubble bottles to toss in the recycling bin. If your kids are bubble fanatics like mine, give this easy DIY bubble solution a try!

This simple recipe was first published on April 20, 2016. I have added a printable recipe card and a few tips for best results and republished it here so my new readers can also enjoy making their own bubble solution.

Homemade Bubble Recipe

Homemade bubble solution can be made using simple and inexpensive ingredients, such as water, dish soap, and glycerin or corn syrup, saving you money compared to store-bought bubbles. Making bubbles can be a fun and engaging activity for both children and adults. It’s a great way to spend time together and explore the science of bubbles. If your kids are old enough, talk to them about the science behind bubbles, including surface tension and how bubbles form and pop.

Craft Supplies needed to make homemade bubbles:

  • Light Corn Syrup
  • Clear Dish Soap
  • Food Coloring (Optional, to make colored bubbles)
  • Water
  • Glass/Plastic Jar
  • Straws or Bubble Wands

Gather you supplies and make room on your kitchen counter for this quick make homemade bubbles project. You will need a bowl, a measuring cup and a mixing spoon.

How To Make Bubble Solution:

Start by adding 6 cups of hot water to a large mixing bowl. Next, add your natural dish soap. You will need to add in 2 cups.

After your dish soap is added, pour in 3/4 cup of light corn syrup. This is the secret ingredient for stronger bubbles. Mix those 2 together. You will start to see bubbles form on the surface. Next, if you wish to make colored bubbles, you will add your food coloring (about 10 drops).

If you want to make several colors, pour your big batch mix into a few different cups/jars before adding your food coloring. More jars means less diy bubble solution, so you will need less food coloring. We chose to just make one color but the bubble recipe makes enough to have a few different colors if you would like! After you have poured your bubble mixture into your jar, add 2 drops of food coloring and stir the homemade bubble solution.

How To Make Bubbles

Now thath you have your own DIY Colored Bubble Solution, you can make bubbles. You just need a straw or a bubble wand.

Making bubbles with a straw is a fun and simple activity. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Dip the Straw: Dip one end of the straw into the bubble solution, making sure it’s fully coated with the solution.
  2. Blow Gently: Place the other end of the straw in your mouth and blow gently to create a bubble. You can experiment with different blowing techniques to create different sizes and shapes of bubbles.
  3. Experiment: Try blowing through the straw at different angles and with varying amounts of force to see how it affects the bubbles you create.
  4. Have Fun: Making bubbles with a straw is a playful activity, so don’t be afraid to experiment and see what kind of bubbles you can create!

Alternatively, using pipe cleaners to make your own bubble wands is another easy DIY project. Just take one pipe cleaner and bend it into a shape you like for your wand. A simple loop or a more elaborate shape like a heart or star works well. Dip the wand into your bubble solution, making sure the entire shape is coated. Then, gently blow through the center of the wand to create bubbles.

Remember to supervise young children during this activity, especially when using the bubble solution. Enjoy making bubbles!

Conclusion

My kids love to take these bubbles out back and play different bubble games with them. See how far they can blow them, see who can blow the biggest ones and even who can catch the most! Bubbles are such a great outdoor activity for a warm day!

Homemade bubble solutions can be more environmentally friendly than store-bought versions, as you can use eco-friendly dish soap and avoid single-use plastic packaging. Since we keep our DIY bubble solution in mason jars, we just toss them in the dishwasher when the bubbles run out. Then, we fill them right back up for the next day.
