If you’re the kind who shies away from the cookie-cutter things in stores, why not expand your DIY projects into window treatments? Try these diy curtain rod and finials and let us know which idea you like best! You can pick up some cheap curtain rod brackets and screws at your local hardware store for a few bucks and they will be just what you need for attaching these DIY curtain rods to the wall.

Just in case you are wondering” What are curtain rod finials”? They are the decorative knobs at the end of the curtain rod. Now, prepare yourself for some unique alternatives to curtain rods and curtain rod finials.

DIY Finials and Curtain Rod Ideas That Look Great

Have you picked out new curtains? Are you ready to make your own curtain rods? These ideas for curtain rod finials are things that can be used as both DIY curtain rods and curtain finials all in one. In other words they have a complete, clean look. Instead of expensive curtain hardware ideas, try these inexpensive simple solutions that work as DIY curtain rods and finials. I have also included a bonus DIY finial idea at the bottom of the post for those of you that just want to add that finishing decorative end cap to the curtain rod.

1. Tree Branch Curtain Rod Finials

If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, this is a great way to bring some of it inside. Just find a relatively straight tree branch of the length you need and trim it. Sand and paint it to match your decor, or leave it natural for a more rustic look. Use tie-top curtains so you can adjust for any curve the branch may have. To add to this natural look, try small pine cones or grapevine balls as curtain rod finials. Just glue them to the ends of the branch to complete your rustic look. Since you can probably find some slim tree branches on your property or a friend’s property, these may just be the cheap curtain rods your are looking for.

2. Wooden Dowels As DIY Curtain Rods

Wood dowels are another good idea. Simple, clean, and versatile, a wooden dowel is easy to trim to size and has almost limitless possibilities for personalization. Just make sure the dowel is thick enough to support your curtains, cut it to the right length, and then paint it and add finials that fit your room. Try gluing decorative caps to wooden ends for more stability and a more finished look. You can get both dowels and wooden balls or discs at any craft or hobby shop. Glue those to the wooden dowel rod for a simple, rod and finial in one piece. Attach your curtains, rest it on some curtain rod hangers, and enjoy. You can even spray the dowel with a metallic paint if you wish to match other hardware in the room.

If you are using curtain rings, you may not want to glue the second finial on until you have slid the rings onto the rod first. If you are using curtain panels with the fabric pocket at the top, you my want to check and ensure they slide on easily before you add the second finial as well.

3. Bamboo Curtain Rods Finials

Bamboo curtain rods are unique alternative to more traditional rods. They are great if your personal style is more of a boho look. For a natural look with a touch of the exotic, bamboo is a strong and stylish product. You can find it in the garden supply section of your home improvement store (such as Home Depot or Lowe’s). They come in various lengths and stains to match your living room decor and work well with any type of window treatment. The neutral nature of bamboo means it won’t compete with a patterned curtain or custom window blinds. For finials, try small wooden doorknobs or grapevine balls to continue the natural look. They are a great idea for a custom curtain rod.

4. DIY Pipe Curtain Rods

Pipe as a curtain rod is another option with endless possibilities. Painted, decorated with decals or cut-outs, wrapped in ribbon or colored paper — it’s a completely versatile solution. Try a white PVC pipe about an inch thick, a little thicker for heavier curtains. Your home improvement store can cut it to size for you, and then you can have fun with it. If you need extra long curtain rods, keep in mind that a PVC pipe may not be sturdy enough. You can either support the long rod with extra curtain brackets or fit a dowel snugly in the pipe for large windows. There are many possibilities for finials too; just attach the object of your choice to the wooden dowels in the pipe. Leave them plain white or paint them when you want a new look.

5. Electrical Conduit Curtain Rod Finials

If you like the look of a metal curtain rod, try using electrical conduit to make your own DIY curtain rod. Most hardware and home improvement stores will cut it to size for you, and you can even make your own custom hooks using conduit clips and L brackets. This is another totally customizable option. Paint it black and add crystal cabinet knobs as finials for a glamorous look, or leave it as is for a modern industrial look. This make cheap DIY curtain rods for modern home decor.
