Quick Math Jr.

If your elementary school-aged child is struggling with math or just finds it boring, this app is for them. Quick Math Jr. turns numbers into something creative and interactive to keep kids engaged. It uses touchscreen technology, requiring handwritten or drawn answers so it helps kids practice handwriting as well. It’s currently only available for iOS.

Epic! has been called “the best reading app for kids.” It contains an e-book library of over 35,000 children’s books and even has a read-to-me feature for kids who are still learning to read. Parents say it’s a great app to have when your kids want screen time but you don’t want them to have it. It’s a nice compromise; they get screen time and you get them engaged in reading. Brainpop Jr. Movie of the Week

Brainpop offers in-depth, easy to understand educational videos and they’ve been operating for 20 years. Videos range from topics of Mozart to Rainforests to food allergies. Each video has a short quiz to help encourage engagement and comprehension. There is a free version available, but you’ll need to subscribe to access the full library. There’s also a version for older kids. It’s available for iOS, Android, and in the Amazon App Store.

Khan Academy Kids

With a variety of courses available, this app offers a wide-range of learning for kids. Their YouTube videos cover math, logic, and socio-emotional learning using books, games, videos and songs. with a learning path that kids can follow to stay engaged. The courses include quizzes to test comprehension and help kids learn. It’s available for iOS, Android, and in the Amazon App Store.

Ages: 2-7 (there’s another option for older kids as well)

These apps for kids will allow your child to enjoy screen time and make you feel better about the time their spending on the screen. With so many great options for fun learning, your child will have a hard time choosing which app they want to spend time on.

Common Sense Media suggests a fun app for kids called Thinkrolls Play & Code. It is offers delightful puzzles to inspire innovation and problem-solving. For age 5+ and it is free.

App prices go up and down and are sometimes free.  Each day the Google Play Store and the App Store feature hot apps for kids that are discounted or free that day, so be sure to check what is featured. Make sure you have phone settings that protect you from younger children making in-app purchases.
