How To Make Your Own Body Butter:

All of the ingredients in this DIY body butter are natural and good for your skin.  You can use organic ingredients if you want this to be an organic body butter recipe. You can purchase the ingredients at health food stores, pharmacies, or order online.

Heat coconut oil and shea butter over low heat in a pyrex glass bowl, stirring frequently just until melted.

Whisk together well.

Place in refrigerator for 30 minutes or until it starts to firm up.

Place mixture in the bowl of a stand mixer or use a hand mixer. This makes it a whipped body butter and gives it a light, smooth texture.

Add essential oils and vitamin E oil.

Beat on high for 5 minutes until light and fluffy.

Your simple whipped body butter is ready to apply to skin or store.

Benefits of this DIY Body Butter

Rub whipped body butter on dry skin to rejuvenate legs and arms and give them a healthy shine.

The main ingredient is shea butter and it is made from nuts of the shea tree. According to Healthline, “High concentrations of fatty acids and vitamins make shea butter an ideal cosmetic ingredient for softening skin. Shea butter also has anti-inflammatory and healing properties.” Using shea in this body butter makes it rich and moisturizing for many hours.

Coconut oil is also great for moisturizing skin and using it in this body butter recipe helps it whip easier, go on smoother, and gives skin a nice shine.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that may be effective at reducing UV damage in skin. It has a very healing and protective effect on skin.

What essential oils are good for body butter?

We chose these citrus essential oils because they give this homemade body butter a lovely, uplifting scent. Orange essential oil and grapefruit essential oil also have antimicrobial properties that help keep skin clear.

As Juicy Chemistry says, “The high limonene content of oil helps scavenge free radicals that could harm healthy cells. It can also inhibit the growth of several bacteria and fungi. When used on the skin, orange oil helps promote clarity, fights inflammation and acne, and keeps our skin fresh.”

Because of the citrus essential oils, it is best not to use this body butter immediately before going into the direct sunlight, but instead after coming out of the sun. There is only a very small amount or essential oils in this body butter recipe but it is always a good idea to avoid sun exposure for 6 hours after using citrus oils to make sure the sun does not cause a reaction that can irritate the skin.

Homemade Body Butter Storage

Store your homemade whipped body butter recipe in a glass jar or other glass airtight containers for a long shelf life. (Citrus essential oils may interact with plastic containers.) The whipping process serves to make it a soft butter which is easier to apply to your skin.

Body butter will soften if the room it is stored in gets very warm. This can be prevented or remedied by setting the container of body butter in the refrigerator. During the summer months I keep this homemade body butter in the fridge- it feels so good coming in from the heat!

Have fun making the all natural body butter! This scented body butter recipe makes a great DIY gift.

Conclusion

Making your own body butter is a simple, cost-effective, and customizable way to nourish your skin with natural ingredients. By choosing high-quality butters and oils, you can create a rich, moisturizing product free from synthetic additives. Whether you’re looking to soothe dry skin, enhance relaxation with essential oils, or craft a thoughtful homemade gift, DIY body butter is a rewarding and practical skincare solution. With just a few ingredients and a little creativity, you can enjoy soft, hydrated skin while knowing exactly what goes into your beauty routine.

I hope you enjoy this easy DIY body butter recipe and that you find the citrus essential oils to be as refreshing as I do. Have you tried making your own products before? Do you think you will give this homemade body butter recipe a try?
