Men and women alike will love how easy this 4 ingredient facial scrub is to make!  DIY beauty treatments like this are a great way to pamper yourself and to really know what is in the beauty products you are using.

This blog post was originally published on December 29, 2015. I have updated it, added a recipe card, and republished it here for your convenience. If you crave a luminous, youthful complexion, you need to try a brown sugar face scrub. This blog post will explore the incredible benefits of brown sugar as an all-natural exfoliant and its ability to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote cell regeneration. Discover the secret to healthier, more radiant skin with this powerful yet gentle scrub that you can easily make at home.

Can you use sugar scrub on your face?

Some scrubs can be much too harsh for facial skin. For example, salt scrubs should not be used on the face. As Flora’s Angels says, “white sugar, which has larger, sharper granules, [are] perfect for exfoliating the body’s skin.” However, white sugar scrubs should not be used on the face either. Brown sugar, on the other hand, is much finer, and gentler so it can be used to exfoliate facial skin.

One of the key benefits of brown sugar as an exfoliant is its gentle nature. Unlike some harsher scrubs that can cause irritation and redness, brown sugar provides a delicate yet effective method of removing dead skin cells. The texture of brown sugar is softer and finer compared to other abrasive scrubs, making it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. If you have very sensitive skin, make sure to test a small amount on a small spot on your neck first to ensure it is fine for you.

With just a few simple ingredients, you’ll be able to whip up a personalized scrub that will rival any expensive skin treatment. Brown sugar is a star ingredient and offers a plethora of benefits when it comes to exfoliating the skin.

In addition to its gentle exfoliating action, brown sugar also contains glycolic acid, a natural alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). This AHA helps to break down the bonds that hold dead skin cells together, allowing them to be easily sloughed away. By removing these dead cells, brown sugar helps to improve the overall texture and tone of your skin, leaving it looking refreshed and rejuvenated.

Unclogging pores is another benefit that brown sugar brings to the table. As dirt, oil, and dead skin cells accumulate in our pores, they can become clogged, leading to breakouts and dull-looking skin. The small granules of brown sugar work as a gentle exfoliant to unclog pores, preventing the buildup of impurities and promoting clearer skin.

Furthermore, brown sugar contains natural humectants, which help to draw moisture into the skin. This hydration boost is especially beneficial for those with dry or dehydrated skin. By incorporating brown sugar into your exfoliation routine, you can effectively remove dead skin cells while simultaneously infusing your skin with much-needed moisture.

Another star ingredient is the coconut oil. According to Healthline, “Coconut oil may benefit your skin in a variety of ways. It may help moisturize your skin, relieve inflammation, accelerate wound healing, and treat acne.” This really is the best face scrub and leaves my skin so soft and smooth.

How To Make A Face Scrub:

To start, gather the following ingredients: brown sugar, coconut oil (or you can substitute olive oil, rosehip oil, or jojoba oil), and essential oils. The great thing about making your own scrub is that you have full control over the ingredients, allowing you to tailor it to your specific skin type and preferences.

Begin by combining the brown sugar and oil in a small bowl. Mix 1/2 a cup of coconut oil with 1/4 a cup of packed brown sugar. The ratio you use will depend on your desired consistency. I prefer a gentler scrub, so I use more oil. Mix the ingredients together until they are well blended and form a paste-like consistency.

Next, add 2 drops of lavender essential oil and 2 drops of tea tree essential oil. These essential oils were picked or their antibacterial properties which will help combat any acne. An added bonus is the all natural, soothing scent. Mix well with the coconut oil/brown sugar mixture.

Once all your ingredients are mixed together, transfer your facial scrub into a glass container with a tight lid. That is all there is to it. You have successfully made DIY brown sugar face scrub and it is ready to use. See directions below.

How To Use Face Scrub

Scoop out a small amount of the DIY brown sugar face scrub (about the size of a quarter or a bit smaller). Gently massage the scrub onto your damp face using circular motions, being cautious to avoid the delicate eye area. Take your time and enjoy the exfoliating sensation as the brown sugar works its magic.

As you rub, it gently exfoliates your dead skin and moisturizes as well.  As Healthline says, “Coconut oil helps bolster your skin’s protective barrier layer, trapping moisture inside and keeping skin supple and hydrated. Reduces inflammation…Increases collagen production.”

After a few minutes of massaging, rinse off the scrub with warm water and pat your face dry with a clean towel. You’ll instantly notice how smooth and refreshed your skin feels, thanks to the brown sugar’s exfoliating properties.

Tips For Using Homemade Face Scrub:

  • First and foremost, it’s important to start with clean skin. This will allow the brown sugar scrub to effectively exfoliate and remove any dead skin cells, leaving your complexion looking fresh and revitalized. If you have makeup or any other products on your face, make sure to thoroughly cleanse your skin before using the scrub.
  • When applying the brown sugar scrub, be gentle. Avoid applying too much pressure, as this can irritate the skin.
  • For best results, use this DIY beauty scrub one or two times per week. Over-exfoliating can disrupt the skin’s natural balance and lead to irritation, so be sure to give your skin some time to rest in between treatments.
  • If you have sensitive skin, it’s wise to do a patch test before applying the scrub to your entire face to ensure it doesn’t cause any adverse reactions.

I have seen a lot of youtube videos lately talking about the best non-abrasive scrubs. Sugar scrubs seem to be the latest trend and I do like making skin products for myself with natural ingredients so I gave this one a try. This is definitely a good face scrub and I will make it again.
