These homemade pixie sticks are easy to make and a great hands-on activity for any age!  DIY Kool-Aid Pixie Sticks Candy treats are a fun way to keep your children occupied and entertained. The advantage of making your own pixie stick is that you can control how much sugar you want in the treat. If you wanted, the sugar can be substituted with artificial sweeteners. Also, you can choose whichever flavor you want to make. By using cute paper straws, you can match it to any décor for your party or just for fun!

Make Your Own Pixie Sticks Candy With This DIY Guide:

Pixie Sticks Candy

What Is A Pixie Stick?

First, on the off chance you have never heard of a pixie stick before, I thought I would answer the question, “What are pixie sticks?” They are an old time classic candy that basically flavored sugar ground real fine and wrapped in a paper straw that you can pour into your mouth in little bits as you want it. Pixy Stix came in Grape, Cherry, and Orange flavors.

Pixie Sticks Ingredients:

The original Pixy Stix ingredients were Dextrose (a simple sugar made from corn), Maltodextrin (a starchy powder that improves shelf life), Citric Acid (a weak acid found in citrus), flavors, and colors.

For these homemade pixie sticks, all you need are two ingredients- sugar and the Kool- Aid flavor of your choice. The Kool-Aid ingredients provide the citric acid, maltodextrin, flavors, and colors to make these taste sweet and sour like the originals.

Are pixie sticks gluten free? Because Kool-Aid is gluten free these pixie sticks will also be gluten free.

How To Make Pixie Sticks

Take a sandwich bag and put ½ cup of granulated sugar and one packet of the Kool- Aid dry mix. You can substitute the sugar with an artificial sweetener if you would like to.  If you want to get real crazy and fun with this, you can even add Pop Rocks!

Shake until it is mixed very well.

Now that the delicious pixie stick sugar is made, here is the fun part. Take your cute paper straws and hot glue the bottom of the straws. You can buy paper straws at your local craft store or order online (affiliate link).

This way the pixie dust stays in the straw. To make sure it is sealed all the way, blow on the open side of the straw and feel for air on your hand from the sealed side. If you feel air coming from the sealed side, make sure to put more hot glue on the sealed side. Let dry completely.

Take your sandwich bag and cut a small hole in the corner. Fill the straw half way. Then, hot glue the end of the straw. (Use care with hot glue gun and supervise children to prevent burns.)  Now you have your own DIY Kool-Aid pixie stick!

Conclusion

Pixie Sticks are a type of candy that consists of flavored, colored sugar in a straw-like tube. They are known for their vibrant colors and sweet, fruity taste. They are surprisingly fun and easy to make. I hope you enjoy making this DIY Pixie Sticks Candy! It is really inexpensive, easy, and so much fun to make! Do you think you and your family will try and make some?

I love this idea. I remember making kool aid and sugar mixture to eat out of a plastic baggie as a kid. Great memories. 😉
