The open end of the windsock catches the wind, causing it to extend and point away from the wind source. The more the windsock inflates and straightens out, the stronger the wind. Patriotic Windsock Craft Supplies Needed:
- Cardstock or thick paper (construction paper will work)
- Any red, white and blue items that you have (we found paper tassels, an old light blue plastic tablecloth and washi tape)
- Tape
- Scissors
- String or Kite Cord
How To Make A Windsock:
Gather your supplies and grab a seat at your table to begin working on your DIY windsock.
First, start by cutting your piece of cardstock in half. Next, roll the card stock up so that both ends overlap. Tape the ends together.
After you have your paper rolled up and taped, decorate the outside anyway that you want to. You can use markers, tape, stickers, etc…I used blue washi tape on mine and the kids decorated theirs with red and blue markers.
Next tape string, ribbons, paper tassels, strips of paper…anything that will blow in the wind to the bottom of your rolled up paper. Make sure to tape the items on the inside.
Cutting is a great fine motor activity for preschool as long as you supervise their scissor use.
Once you have taped your items and they go all the way around the inside, cut a piece of cord or string and tape that to the top of your windsock. That way you can pick a spot outside and hang up your windsock.
Let you child/children pick a spot outside to hang up their windsocks. My son chose a tree branch in a tree right outside of his bedroom window and my daughter chose to hang hers in a bush outside of our kitchen window so that she can see it while she eats!
