If your kids like crafting, we have a quick and easy to make patriotic craft tutorial for them today! Our family loves to decorate with red, white and blue around the 4th of July and my children have really taken up crafts lately. So I decided to let them try their hand at Patriotic Sun Catchers recently! Sun catchers can be hung just about anywhere. You just need a window! This Patriotic Sun Catcher is a fun craft for any age child.

  • Blue or Red Construction Paper
  • Red, White and/or Blue Tissue Paper
  • Small Ziplock Bag
  • Scissors
  • Tape (any clear tape will work)

Directions For How To Make Your Patriotic Sun Catcher:

First gather your supplies and head to a table. Spread your supplies out and start by cutting a border for your sun catcher out of construction paper. I helped my kids lay the bag down and cut strips around the bag. You can grab a pencil and measure if you’d prefer.

Next, cut or tear pieces of your tissue paper and lay in a small pile. The pieces don’t have to be perfectly cut/torn and are better if they aren’t all the same size! After making a small pile of tissue paper pieces, grab your plastic bag and start tapping your tissue paper pieces to the back. Mix your colors up as you are laying them down. You can even lay down a row and put one long piece of tape over all the pieces of tissue paper.

After you have covered your plastic bag, flip your bag over and tape your construction pieces to all 4 sides that you cut out for your border.

Add a string or a ribbon to the back of your Patriotic Sun Catcher and let your child find a perfect spot to hang their project up! My kids hung theirs up in their bedroom windows!

Has your child ever made a sun catcher before? Let them try their hand at this easy, fun, patriotic one!
