It feels like my family and I just celebrated the New Year, but now we are already at the end of the month of February. Time flies too quickly for sure! Here is an easy, recycled craft idea for kids to capture some of those fun memories – a family memory box made from a recycled canister and an outgrown pair of jeans. I hope you enjoy this cute old jeans craft.

Family Memory Box Old Jeans Craft Tutorial

Family Memory Box

Here is what you will need:

  • empty canister (an oatmeal, snack, or coffee canister works great)
  • a pair of jeans (an old pair of jeans that the kids have outgrown works perfect)
  • contact paper or vinyl paper (color/pattern of choice)
  • scissors
  • craft glue or glue gun
  • decorative ribbon of choice .
  • paper and pen

Crafting with old jean pockets can be a fun and creative way to upcycle denim. This idea not only give new life to old jeans but also add a touch of personal style and functionality to your project.

How to Make a Family Memory Box With Old Jeans:

1. Clean out and remove label from a canister in your recycling bin.

2.  With a sharp pair of scissors, cut out one back pocket from an old pair of jeans. (I used a pair that my tween grew out of, but I still loved the embroidered design on the pockets.)

3.  Cut a piece contact paper or adhesive vinyl large enough to wrap around the whole can. (I used a piece of silver craft vinyl paper.)

4.  Carefully remove the backing from the paper, and attach slowly around the can. Smooth out any wrinkles as needed.

5.  With some all-purpose tacky craft glue or a glue gun, glue the jean pocket on the front of the canister over the paper. Glue some decorative ribbon along the top and bottom edges of the can.

6.   Cut a long rectangular slit on the plastic lid on top.

7.  Cut small pieces of paper (approximately 4 1/4″ x 1 1/2″) from a few sheets of letter-sized paper.

8.  Place the paper and a pen or marker in the jean pocket, and your favorite family memory box is complete!

Conclusion

Whenever a family member has a favorite memory or thought they want to remember, have them write it on a piece of paper and insert into the box. Add personal touches like handwritten notes, drawings, or quotes that capture the essence of each memory.

You all might like to collect and add items that hold sentimental value, such as photographs, tickets from events, postcards, letters, or small mementos like souvenirs from vacations from the course of the year. Label items with dates, locations, and brief descriptions to help recall the significance of each memory.

Make it a habit to update the memory box regularly with new items and memories as your family continues to create them.

At the end of the year, open the box and have run reading all of your favorite family memories from the year.  Share stories, reminisce, and reflect on the memories you’ve collected together.
