Summer is known to be a hot and fun season! However, there are still days rainy days and gloomy days that may hinder plans. It is upsetting, but it’s even worse when your activities are outside. To help make a gloomy day brighter, I give you eight fun family activities on a rainy day!

Fun Family Activities On A Gloomy Day

Family Activities On A Gloomy Day

Indoor Family Fun At Home

Indoor Treasure Hunt

You can get note cards and write fun rhymes that will lead to the next clue until you get to a great treasure, like ice cream or chocolate coins! You can find some example ideas at scavenger-hunt-fun.com. Nothing gets the kids excited like rushing to find the next clue and figure it out.

Make Play Doh

Thanks to instructables.com you can make your own Play-Doh with the use of flour, warm water, salt, vegetable oil and cream of tartar or try this cool recipe for cornstarch play dough.

Create a Family Cook Book

Have tons of recipes and want to clean them up? Use a blank journal to insert recipes with family photos and alphabet stickers. Need instructions check out livecrafteat.com.

Make a Pillow Fort

Make a fort with the use of couch pillows and a few sheets you and your kids can make a pillow fort and watch movies under it.

Homemade S’mores

Using marshmallows, graham cracker and chocolate bars, you can make s’mores in the oven.

Old School Movie Night

Have any movies you loved as a child? A lot of movies can be downloaded or streamed straight from the internet. Show your kids movies you loved as a child, it’s a great way to bond.

Make crayons

Do your children have a lot of crayons that are in pieces or almost gone? Take the old crayons, remove paper, place in muffin pans and let the magic begin. Crayons will melt in the oven and your children will have custom colors for a whole new coloring adventure.  Interested in the details? Check out this tutorial for how to upcycle crayons.

Bake Sweets

Bake cookies and other sweets to give to the people that get caught in the rain, like postal workers and other people that deliver goods to your own.

Indoor Family Fun Around Town

Museums are indoor family fun
Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta

Museums

Each museum is a unique chance to bring history to life through visual and interactive exhibits. Take advantage of the chance for educational fun. You can use aam-us.org to help you locate the museums near you.

Coloring

Children love to color, the problem can be paper and crayons or even markers. Check in your surroundings, the event you may be at may have accommodations for children. If you will be busy for an extended time, purchase a coloring book, Crayola even has books and markers that won’t show on anything but the paper.

Arcade

Find an old school arcade so children have access to a variety of games they can play. Chuck E Cheese has fun games of all sorts.

Shopping

If you are itching to get out of the house, you can take a family shopping trip. You can divide up the grocery shopping list or you can go shopping to replace the clothes your child has already grown out of!

I hope this list of family activities on a gloomy day and that it provides you with a full day of fun! Which of the family activities are your favorite? Do you have anything special you do with your children on rainy days?

Great list of ideas. I am thankful that it hasn’t been over 100 yet, in DFW. We have gotten close but not quite triple digits. 🙂
