I believe in good clean fresh air for my health as well as for the sake of my nose! It can be hard to keep up with eliminating unpleasant odors that linger in your home, from the smell of dinner to the cat litter box, or even my husband’s home brewing hobby. Here are five home odor removal tips to help you naturally eliminate household odors.
Natural Odor Prevention Tips And Home Odor Removal Tips :
I try to naturally eliminate house odors by opening the windows as much as possible to let the air circulate and because I have always heard that outside air is cleaner and healthier than the air in people’s homes. In the summer I try turn off the air conditioner and open the windows in the evening when it is cool enough outside. I open windows that will create natural cross ventilation and also put on the ceiling fan to help the bring fresh air in. I also like to use essential oils to freshen the linens. Changing my HVAC filter monthly is another way I try to address the quality of air throughout the house.
In addition to my own home odor control tips I shared above, here are five tips from healthy living expert and author, Lisa Beres, on how to naturally remove odors from the home.
Eliminate refrigerator odors.
Clean the fridge drawers and shelves by adding a few drops of natural dish soap to a bowl of baking soda and stir until it creates a thick paste. This will remove odors as well as stains left behind from food. Also keep an open box of baking soda in the fridge to trap odors. (I always do that and I think it helps keep funky flavors out of your food too!)
Eliminate kitchen odors.
Prevent unappealing cooking odors, such as fish, from spreading and lingering throughout the entire home by upgrading to the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter. It traps odors and gases from the air passing through the filter and helps keep the home fresh for families and houseguests.
Eliminate mildew odors.
To rid towels of the mildew smell, first wash them once in hot water with a cup or two of white vinegar. Then wash them again with a natural or eco-friendly laundry detergent. Finally, dry the towels in the dryer on high heat. To avoid mildew and associated smells in the future, hang towels up right away to ensure they dry thoroughly.
Eliminate pet odors.
Reduce the unpleasant smell of pet dander by bathing and grooming your pet weekly and establishing pet-free zones in the home, such as the bedroom.
The air filter that author Lisa Beres mentioned is the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter from 3M – “the most effective carbon filter at removing odors from the entire home”!
The Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter from 3M:
65 times more effective than other carbon filters at removing odors Lasts up to three months for odor removal and particle capture from the air passing through the filter.
Helps reduce airborne allergens from the air passing through the filter, such as household dust, pollen, dust mite debris and mold spores.
Helps maintain airflow in heating and cooling systems, which may help prevent stress on the system and reduce the amount of energy needed to cool the home this summer.
I have to tell you that I was aware that good quality filters were worth the investment to help keep the air in my home healthy but I never knew that they could remove odors and I am amazed that the the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter from 3M is 65 times as effective as other filters!! Plus they reduce allergens. Pretty cool!

Being a painting contractor, we run into a lot of homes with pet, and cigarette smoke odors. Painting the interior walls will not stop the odors as they become impregnated in the carpet, carpet pads, upholstery and drapes making the home harder to sell or rent, looks good, smells awful. We have used an ozone generator, which worked well, but the house had to be vacated during the operation slowing the work schedule. A contractor mentioned a product called Air-ReNu that is mixed with paint works like a charm, no odor, no electricity, no filters and no odors.
