As the weather warms up, I start craving the fruity flavors of summertime. It is always nice to relax on my porch and enjoy a nice refreshing drink with a tropical twist. There is no better way to get my teens to come outside and enjoy the outdoors with me than to announce that it is slushie time! We pull out the blender, ice, and our favorite beverages and we have homemade slushies ready in just a few minutes. Here is how we make a slushie in a few simple steps. They are the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day and enjoy being with the ones you love.
What Is A Slushie?
Slushies are frozen beverages where the ice is so fine that you can suck it through the straw. There are many names for these types of drinks such as granitas, a slush, a slushy, or a frozen drink.
Slushies that you buy pre-made at places like a gas station are often extremely sweet. I like to make my own homemade slushies where I can choose the ingredients. The Tropicana® Premium Drinks are perfect for this. Plus DIY slushies are only a fraction of the cost of ones you might order out.
Tropicana® Premium Drinks
My kids and I all have our own personal favorite flavors but here are three different flavors to make slushies with:
Tropicana® Zero Sugar Summer Splash Punch: A new take on a classic fruit punch made with zero sugar and no artificial sweetener ingredients.
Tropicana® Pineapple Mango Splash: A refreshing blend of bright, tropical fruit flavors. This taste of delicious fruit juices is wholesome and delicious.
Tropicana® Caribbean Sunset: A tangy, refreshing juice drink that will quench your thirst with the bright tastes of oranges, pineapples and cherries. It’s a delicious, tropical flavor that will leave you wanting more!
These fruity slushies are a fun way to cool off on a hot day.
How To Make A Slushie
This cool slushie recipe is so easy to make that it almost isn’t a recipe! The only trick is in knowing the ratio of ice cubes to juice. I started out with half as much ice as liquid but it did not mix evenly and the ice was lumpy. I found that you need to have at least 1:1 for the proper ratio of ice to juice to get a nice smooth consistency. Because ice is chunky and hard to measure with so much air between the larger cubes, you may want to err on the side of adding extra ice.
You will need a blender for this recipe. A good blender is preferable to get the ice nice and fine. You may want to use crushed ice if your blender isn’t high-powered.
Ingredients:
- Ice
- Tropicana® Premium Drinks
Directions:
Add ice and juice to blender. Some blenders may have pre-settings for smoothies or frozen drinks. Use that setting if provided. If not, blend on high for about 2 minutes.
When the power is off, take a look at the consistency of the slushie. If the juice is separating out too much from the ice, add another cup of ice and blend again for another 2 minutes. Now you should have the perfect slushie with your desired consistency!
Pour and enjoy!
Take your slushie outdoors and enjoy the summertime with your family. They make a great beverage to enjoy while you grill out, enjoy a BBQ, or gather around the pool. They are also perfect for summer parties.
