Crafting around the holidays is a family favorite around here. We like to use nature whenever possible to make all kinds of nature crafts! My kids always love hunting around outside for materials to use! This Pine Cone Christmas Tree craft is so easy to make and a lot of fun as well. You more than likely have all the supplies that you need. This is a very inexpensive craft to make which is always nice. If you don’t have a Pine tree in your yard, go hunting around your neighborhood or even to a park. I bet you can find some pine cones that have fallen off a tree instead of going out and buying some! Here is my simple tutorial for how to make pine cone Christmas trees.
DIY Pine Cone Christmas Trees
Making pine cone Christmas trees is a fun and creative project because it combines crafting, nature, and holiday spirit into a simple yet satisfying activity. It’s an opportunity to explore artistic expression by painting, decorating, and personalizing the pine cones with glitter, beads, or tiny ornaments. This project is also family-friendly, making it a great bonding activity for kids and adults alike. As decor, pine cone Christmas trees bring a rustic and festive charm to any space. They can be displayed as centerpieces, hung as ornaments, or placed on mantels, shelves, or windowsills to create a cozy and natural holiday atmosphere.
Craft Supplies Needed:
- Pine Cones (these can be collected in your yard or a park if you like free craft supplies)
- Dark green paint and/or white acrylic paint
- Paintbrush
- Decorations for your tree (twine, ribbon, stickers, bells etc…)
- Red or Yellow Pipe Cleaners (to make a star Christmas tree topper)
For the base of the Christmas tree we used rings cut from an empty toilet paper roll. You can just place the pine cones on the round base or you can secure them with hot glue. Alternatively, you could use cotton as a snowy setting for the “pine trees” or even cute tiny pots painted white if you want a more elegant look.
We used green acrylic paint for painting the pine cone. However, you could use white acrylic craft paint if you prefer the look of a frosted tree.
How To Make A Pine Cone Christmas Tree Craft:
This is a very simple tutorial that can be so much fun for you and your kids. For the first step, start with your pine cones and your paint. Lay down a piece of newspaper under your pine cone to prevent paint from getting on your work space. Squirt a little paint on your paper or into a little bowl and paint your pine cone. Start with the base of the cone and work your way up. Optional- you could grab some glitter and sprinkle your tree right after covering it evenly with paint.
Once your pine cones are dry, add your decorations. We chose to add a pipe cleaner star to the top of the cone. We used some twine and stickers to decorate the rest of the “pine trees”.
I took a toilet paper roll and cut a small piece off of the end to make a little stand for our pinecone trees. The bottoms of the pinecones rest perfectly on the round bases. You can leave them white or paint them brown like a tree trunk, as you prefer.
Conclusion
My kids loved making a few of these trees and placing them around the house. My son wanted to make his tree a Lego tree so he took some extra Lego pieces and glued them to his pine cone tree. The possibilities for decorating your little pine cone trees are endless.
By repurposing natural materials, you reduce waste and bring the beauty of the outdoors into your home. This craft blog is very impressive for children to make pine cone Christmas trees. The usage of craft material from the home to make the Christmas tree is good because children and parents get creative ideas like the pipe cleaner for stars and paper roll for tree base. Decorations are fantastic.
