Whether you’re an avid novelist or simply a dedicated book collector, most homeowners and renters have spare books lying around. As technology becomes more prevalent, you might be reaching for your e-reader over hardcovers and paperbacks. But, don’t get rid of physical copies just yet. Instead, upcycle old books into décor pieces around your home for creative and intelligent interior design. Here are some simple hacks for using books as interior design statements. You will love these fun, clever ideas for how to decorate with books.

5 DIY Decor Ideas To Upcycle Old Books

Decorating with books can add character and warmth to your space. Here are several creative ways to incorporate books into your decor.

Book Table Lamps

Instead of opting for basic ceramic lamp bases, why not stack some old books for a library-like vibe? Purchase a lighting kit and assemble according to the instructions, then place the base of the light on top of loosely stacked hardcovers. If you have kids and want a sturdier structure, glue the books together and drill a hole to feed the lighting wire through.  You can see an more in depth book lamp tutorial here.

DIY hollowed out book

Safety Storage Boxes

Hiding precious belongings at home is important in case of break-ins or snooping visitors. Instead of using a lock box or safe, hollow out the inside of an old book and use it to store jewelry and other precious goods. You can place your decoy book on a shelf with whole books to throw off thieves – or relatives trying to peek at their holiday gifts early.  You can also use hollowed out books as cute coffee table decor that hides your phone while it charges!

Stools and Side Chairs

Those old textbooks from high school and college cost a fortune, and past editions are too difficult to resell. Rather than list on eBay for a few dollars, stack up old, larger books to create stools and ottomans around your home. Place books on top of a wooden base and secure together with super glue. Then, place a pillow on top for comfort. You can even add castor wheels at the bottom of your book stool for easy movement and stowage.

Succulent Planters

Succulents are perfect for beginner plant owners as they require little to no maintenance. Hollow out the inside of your favorite novels – just make sure they are deep enough to conceal the succulent container you plan to place inside. Arrange one or multiple cacti in a fun, interesting pattern.  You can see a cute example and tutorial at HGTV.

Floating Shelves

Install floating shelves to display books as a focal point on your wall. Mix in framed photos or artwork to create a gallery effect.

Combine Music and Literature

Residents searching for homes in Nashville and other cities known for their music might prefer decorating with instrumental throwbacks over novels – but why not incorporate both? Try stacking your old books to create side table showcase for your record player or music mementos.

I love, LOVE the idea of a hidden phone charger! What a neat way to reduce the cluttered look that happens with charging phones. I think the book lamp would also be a great handmade gift for a few bookworms I know!

I LOVE the book as a charging station. We’re getting ready for our garage sale and we have a ton of old hardbacks we were going to put out for sale. I think I have to go and grab a few now!

Yes! We have lots of old textbooks from our college years. However, my husband considers each and everyone of our books as treasures so there is no way we will be repurposing any of them! LOL. But the idea is pretty cool and the books all look so neat as decor! I love being surrounded with books!

These are fun book decor ideas and a great way to recycle! I see such lovely books discarded at the thrift store all the time. It would be neat to turn them into something useful!
