Kindergarten Readiness Assessment and Preparation Activities

I remember when my daughter started Kindergarten.  It was such a big deal!  I was so excited for her but also concerned.  Would she be ready for kindergarten? Would she like it?  If you have a child of Pre-K age, you probably have some of the same concerns. A kindergarten readiness assessment may be the perfect tool to help you determine what types of kindergarten readiness activities are needed to prepare your child.

This post is brought to by On The Mark Tutoring.

“Did you know that studies show that close to 40% of children enter kindergarten with insufficient math and language skills which automatically puts them behind target on their first day of school?”

Kindergarten Readiness Assessment

It is important to evaluate your child objectively and figure out exactly what they need to work on to be ready for kindergarten.  A kindergarten readiness assessment will provide an idea of the child’s academic level and also their learning style.  This information is the foundation for increasing the child’s learning and development.

The Kindergarten Readiness Assessment will include looking for skills such as ability to use scissors, identify letters, identify rhyming sounds, identify beginning word sounds, identify common sight words, and more. Some tutoring services will even offer free assessment testing. On The Mark is one such tutoring service in my Nashville area that does provide free assessment along with a personalized learning plan for your child.

Kindergarten Readiness Activities

Kindergarten preparation should consist of a well-balanced enrichment program with hands-on and visual techniques to help your child accelerate, engage and maintain academic skills.  To prepare your child for kindergarten, they should work on skills such as following directions, knowing how to spell their own name, counting, and adding. And the trick is, of course, keeping the kindergarten readiness activities and learning fun for your child. Try teaching these types of skills through fun games and crafts.

Research shows that children who start prepared for school find it easier to stay on the mark for the rest of their school years.  One valuable resource for success in education is the Keeping My Kiddo Busy Blog filled with many more valuable tips on kindergarten readiness and curriculum tips.

Summer Learning Loss

Whether your child is headed to kindergarten or to the next grade level, you will want to keep them engaged in academics over the summer so that they don’t suffer from summer learning loss.  Helping your child to avoid this lapse in knowledge and academic skills, that often occurs over the course of summer vacation, will help make your child more successful in school.  Try fun kindergarten readiness activities like a math journal.

On The Mark Nashville Tutoring Services

If you feel that you and your child could benefit from a kindergarten readiness assessment and some hands-on, fun educational activities that will help your child build a solid academic foundation for success in school, you want to find a tutor.

Private one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions in literacy and mathematics can help prepare your child for kindergarten or catch your child up to their elementary school grade level.  Tutoring services are offered year round and summer learning programs are great to prevent summer learning loss and give your child the confidence to succeed in school.
