For the last two summers, we have loaded up our family and taken massive road trips. Our kids are 11 and 13 now and we want to show them the United States! There is just so much natural splendor to see. They are old enough to remember the trips, appreciate the historical and cultural lessons, and we want to enjoy special time with them exploring before they go off to college. Last summer we did a Southwest road trip itinerary and this summer we just finished our Northeast road trip. Interested in taking a scenic drive through the best places in the New England States and/or Canada? We took a scenic route with lots of outdoor activities and historic sites. From small towns to National Parks, you can see it all!
Our Canada and New England road trip itinerary was three weeks of jam packed exploration and it was a trip that we will all always remember. We started our Northeast Road Trip from our home city of Nashville and we went up into Michigan and then on into Canada and back down into New England. We had a great time and I hope our summer family Northeast road trip inspires you to explore and take a family road trip of your own. It is a great way to explore the Northeastern United States from quaint seaside towns to well-known popular attractions.
Our 3 Week Northeast Road Trip Itinerary
I have given the short version of our Northeast road trip with just destinations and driving times first but I have also followed that with more details about what to do, eat, and where to stay at each road trip stop. Summer Northeast Road Trip Details
Day 1 Nashville,TN to Ann Arbor, MI
This was one of the longest drives of the trip so we broke our trip up by stopping midway in Cincinnati,OH. My husband has visited Cincinnati every year for the last six years for work so he is very familiar with it and has always told me what a up and coming city it is. He has seen lots of great restaurants and fun bars open in The Banks and the Over-the-Rhine district and it was fun to get to stop of one of his favorites as we were passing through.
A Taste of Belgium at The Banks was a great way to get to view the city along the Ohio River and parking was easy to find on the street. The Belgian waffles are something else and the pile of whipped cream was divine! Afterwards, we did a quick drive through downtown Cincinnati to get a feel for it and then we kept going on up to Ann Arbor.
A word about the drive- we pack books, cards, coloring books, and activity books. We also use Spotify and listen to podcasts so the time passes pretty fast while we watch the changing scenery go by.
We arrived in Ann Arbor in the mid afternoon and we checked into our hotel and my husband relaxed with a soccer game while I brought the kids to get some energy out at the hotel pool. Then we drove through Ann Arbor to see the University of Michigan and get a feel for the vibe of Ann Arbor on our way over to Island Park.
We were actually in Ann Arbor for a wedding rehearsal dinner and one of the Island Park pavilions was our meeting spot. They had the Wood Fired Up Pizza Truck there (delicious) and it was a fun night! The park was a great spot for the kids to play in and by the shallow river and spot ducks.
Day 2 Ann Arbor, Michigan
We started the morning off with some amazing pastries from Zingerman’s.
Then we went to explore Matthaei Botanical Gardens. My kids absolutely love that kind of thing. Learning is absolute fun for them. They raced around going, “Momma, look at the this Cocoa tree!” and, “Look at these baby pineapples”. We saw cool things like aloe trees and read about cacti and bonsai tree gardening. We explored the outdoor gardens and the kids area too where my kids made plant jewelry for me and read funny gardening jokes to me. Being a mom is a pretty good life, I tell you!
Then we explored downtown Ann Arbor a bit more and had lunch at Tomukun Noodle Bar. The Pho and Ramen portions are huge and the food was very good. I loved their pork buns!
In the evening we headed off to Zingerman’s Cornman Farms for a beautiful outdoor wedding and barn dance reception. It was really a beautiful spot and it was capped off with a little star gazing by the firepit before we called it quits for the night.
Day 3 Ann Arbor, MI to Toronto, ON
After breakfast in Ann Arbor we set off to Toronto which was a little over 4 hours away. We drove over the bridge into Canada and stopped at the checkpoint. Because we were traveling with our dog, we brought records of his current vaccinations as were required but it was no extra hassle getting through other than showing the papers.
We stayed in a AirBNB in the Caledonia / Corso Itaia area. The up side to that choice was that we felt like we got see what it would be like to live in a residential area of Toronto and check out the Italian and Portuguese neighborhoods. The down side was we felt rather removed from Old Toronto. (You can’t have everything!) That night we dined at the Agio Italian Ristorante and we really enjoyed the experience. We are super picky about Italian food but that was good quality, authentic Italian. We also enjoyed a stop at La Paloma Gelateria & Cafe.
Day 4 Toronto, Ontario Providence, Canada
We drove towards downtown Toronto but stopped off for breakfast as the most delightful place- The Tempered Room. I am talking delicious pastries and perfect cappuccino (5 out of 5 stars). Then we proceeded to Lakeshore Blvd to drive through the Marilyn Bell Park along the waterfront- very scenic spot for a stroll.
We found parking at the Toronto CN Tower and began a grand walking tour of Toronto. We were going to go up the CN Tower but the line was pretty long and we were anxious to start exploring. First, we walked by the Rogers Centre and through the Roundhouse Park.
Then, we checked out Union Station both because it is a beautiful building and so that the kids could see what a real, active train station looks like. Plus, they had great food vendors and places to sit out front. Then we passed the Hockey Hall of Fame.
We took a break from walking in Berczy Park where the kids loved the animal water fountain with mostly dogs and a few cats. Next up was the Gooderham flatiron building and then the St. Lawrence Market where we sampled the tasty peameal bacon sandwiches.
Then we took The Esplanade over to Parliment Square Park and The Distillery Historic District. The Distillery District was full of good eats and funky shops as well as Instagram worthy backdrops.
At the end of our walking tour, we were pretty tuckered out so we went back to our AirBNB and then the kids and I walked over to the Joseph J. Piccininni Community Centre and got in some relaxing pool time. We stopped at the Paloma Gelateria again too because it was so good!
That evening we had a fancy dinner at the Churrasqueira Martins Grill House. I figured we might as well sample the Portuguese fare since we were staying in that part of town. It was a great choice.
Day 5 Toronto, ON to Ottawa, ON
We stopped at Caledonia Bakery & Pastry before we left Toronto. It was fun to try a Portuguese bakery which was something new for us.
We broke our drive up a bit by stopping for a look see at the cute town of Kingston which is located where the St. Lawrence River flows in Ontario Lake so there are plenty of great waterfront views. We had a delicious lunch at The Rustic Spud Restaurant. We loved their spiral spuds appetizer and oh so good pizzas.
We arrived in Ottawa and quickly checked into the Fairmont Chateau Laurier so we could go out and explore Ottawa. It was such a gorgeous city and very walking friendly. We strolled along Parliament Hill and passed the Supreme Court of Canada.
Then we went down to the Trans Canada Trail to walk along the Ottawa River and up Canal Lane past the Rideau Canal and Ottawa Lockstation. We looped back behind the Fairmont and through Major Hill’s Park. We ended up at Tavern On The Hill. The had all sorts of fancy hotdogs there but the real jewel of it was just being able to relax and enjoy the incredible views and listen to live music while you sipped on a sangria or local beer. I really could have sat there all evening but we had more to explore.
We walked the National Gallery of Canada and enjoyed their sculptural gardens and then up the Napean Point with the Champlain monument. This spot gives you the most spectacular view of the city. I fell in love with Ottawa right there and I would be happy to go back any time!
Next, we walked over to the Piccolo Grande Gelateria which was so worth a stop. Yum! Then we walked on into the ByWard Market area which was full of cool shops and restaurants with a fun vibe.
Finally, we ended out the night swimming out our hotel pool. That is a big part of summer fun after all:)
Day 6 Ottawa, ON to Montreal, QC
My husband procured some delicious pastries on his morning walk with the dog and then we went back for a bit more pool time before checking out of the fancy hotel to go camping!
On our way to Montreal we stopped in Hawkesbury which was in Quebec providence and so the first French speaking stop we made. We had a very filling lunch at Goodies Restaurant and the waitress was able to speak English with us just fine after she realized our French language limitations! My plate of Poutine was amazing, my son’s burger hit the spot, and, my daughter’s grilled chicken Caesar salad was fabulous.
We chose to camp outside of Montreal for three nights at Oka National Park (Parc National Oka). It was a nice camping spot with beach access and we always love to go camping as a big part of our summer fun. We stocked up on groceries in the small town of Oka, set up camp, checked out the beach spot, enjoyed an evening stroll, and relaxed around the evening campfire. Word of warning- there are mosquitos in OKA National Park so bring your insect repellent!
Day 7 Montreal, Quebec Providence, Canada
Since we were camping without internet, I did an Instagram post of the Montreal highlights all at once- you can scroll through the pics here.
We started off our morning in Montreal with a trip to a famous Montreal Bagel Bakery. The St-Viateur Bagel bakes their bagels in a wood-burning oven, which makes them extra crispy and the water profile gives them a distinctive slightly sweeter flavor. Just as a heads up, the shop itself is focused on producing amazing bagels and not so much on cream cheese and sandwich presentation.
Next we got a sneak peek at Montreal by driving up to the Mount Royal Lookout. It was a very pretty drive and the there were lots of spots to pull over and enjoy the view.
We found parking in Old Montreal and went for a walking tour. We started at the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal which sits across the Place d’Armes (an open plaza with a fountain and statue) from the beautiful BMO Bank of Montreal building. Dating back to 1824, the Notre-Dame Basilica is very pretty outside and inside with very detailed and ornate architectural features, vibrant stained glass windows, a beautiful ceiling, and organ.
There were several nice tourists shops with fun souvenirs for friends when we came out of the Notre Dame Basilica headed towards the Montreal City Hall. We also saw the Champ-de-Mars Park Nelson’s Column, and Place Jacques-Cartier.
The shining silver dome of the Bonsecours Market in Old Montreal can’t help but draw you to it and it is filled with shops, good eats, and art. The facade of the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel was also very pretty to look at.
Then we headed toward the Promenade du Vieux-Port for our walk along the waterfront. There was lots to do there from La Grande Roue de Montréal (ferris wheel) to paddle boating, bike riding, ziplining and shopping.
We stopped for dinner on the way back to our campground at Lester’s Deli because, of course, we had to try the best Montreal smoked meat sandwich while we were there!
After a day of exploring fun in Montreal, we headed back to our campground for an evening beach stroll and some campfire time.
Day 8 Montreal, Quebec Providence, Canada
We actually just relaxed at the Oka National Park campground this day. After all the non-stop travel we took a day to enjoy simple life at the campground with time at the beach, time to play cards, and time to read in the hammock.
Day 9 Montreal, QC to Quebec City, QC
On leaving Oka National Park, we stopped for a big breakfast at Restaurant Sel, Poivre Et Pommes in St Eustache. Delicious! Then we headed for Quebec City. The Quebec City Summer Festival just happened to be going on during our visit so it was hard finding a hotel in the area since so many were booked for the huge music festival. We ended up staying a little outside for a much more reasonable rate at the Hôtel Le Voyageur de Québec.
We headed into Quebec City and stopped for a bite to eat at the Korrigane Brasserie in the St. Roch neighborhood. This brew pub features quality fare and craft beers so it was right up my husband’s alley. Half our trip was planned around finding good breweries;)
Then we found a parking spot and took a walking tour of Old Québec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is actually the only walled city north of Mexico and it feels very European to pass through the Fortifications of Québec and walk down the cobbled streets. Very pedestrian friendly, the streets are bustling with shops, restaurants, and people out enjoying the summer weather. We wandered along and ended up seeing a fun street show right in the open area in front of Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral. We also peaked inside of this beautiful cathedral that has stood on the site since 1647.
Next we wandered over to the Rue de Tesor which is a fun street filled with artist selling all sorts of cool creations. Then on to Fairmont Le Château Frontenac which is a beautiful piece of the Quebec City skyline. They seem to have the absolute best locations because from there you can take a stroll on the Terrasse Dufferin, a popular terrace overlooking the river with great views.
Then we passed through the Parc des gouverneurs and Parc du Bastion-de-la-Reine for some more fantastic views and into the La Citadelle de Québec which is atop Cap Diamant in Old Québec and represents 300 years of history.
We spent the evening enjoying the Festival d’été de Québec! Some of the stages were free and the stage above was right near the Parliament Building so you had that beautiful building to look at while we waited for the show to start!
Day 10 Quebec City, Quebec Providence, Canada
We started off our morning with a trip to Montmorency Falls. It was a fantastic choice that I would say not to miss! The falls were something else- truly impressive plus you can take an easy, flat hike over to them and get up really close so that you feel the mist coming down on you. This 275-foot waterfall is even taller than Niagara Falls plus it has an awesome suspension bridge built over it so you can walk over the falls! To get up to the suspension bridge you can either drive around the back side or you can hike up a set of stairs that is built into the rock face for more adventure and views. I am slightly scared of heights and so is my son but we did it anyway. Nothing like conquering you fears!
Then when we got to the top they had a zipline that my kids were going to do but they didn’t weigh enough! They also had rock climbing on the sheer cliff and I watched the tiny ant sized people and wondered if they were as scared as I was just watching them!
We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Le Maizerets with some upscale, yummy but unusual pizzas.
Them we headed back into Quebec City for the last night of Festival d’été de Québec to see Dave Matthews play. Very cool evening!
Day 11 Quebec City, QC to Bar Harbor, ME
For the next part of our Northeast road trip, we headed back into the USA and down to Bar Harbor, part of coastal Maine. The drive felt pretty long because these was no cell phone service for a large part of the drive. Download your maps before you leave your hotel! We stopped for for lunch to break up the trip and rolled into our oceanside KOA around 2pm. We decided this would be a laid back day with easy explorations around the campground.
The kids and I took time to explore the beach and look in tidal pools. The views of the harbor were amazing and the kids saw lots of wildlife. I met another KOA family and enjoyed talking to the mom about their summer travels. Before you know it, the mist was rolling in heavily and we could barely see 20 feet in front of us!
It was time for dinner by then anyway so we headed out to The Travelin’ Lobster. We got two buckets of lobsters with mussels and we devoured them!
Then we retired back to our campground for more beach side exploration and then smores around the camp fire. Maine was off to a good start!
Day 12 Bar Harbor, Maine
This was our day to visit Acadia National Park. It was a misty day but it was still beautiful in an other worldly sort of way. We also took a walk to Bar Island.
We had delicious sandwiches at Mother’s Kitchen for lunch (cash only).
Then we explored Bar Harbor- so many cute shops there with fun souvenirs! My daughter chose and oyster and got twin pearls! Very exciting! They had whale watching trips which would have been amazing but you have to save some things for later.
We had dinner at Smokey’s BBQ & Lobster Pound (so good!) and then did another campfire circle with s’mores.
Day 13 Bar Harbor, ME to Carroll, NH
Next stop on our Northeast road trip was New Hampshire but we went through the Acadia Park Loop again before we left Maine because it was a sunny day and we wanted to catch some of the clear day views from the park. It was worth another trip- for sure!
We stopped in Bangor, Maine to catch a glimpse of the Stephen King House! Not that eventful but just cool for us book nerds!
Then while we were in the area, we made a visit to Geaghan’s Pub & Craft Brewery for some lunch and to let my husband try their craft brews. The food was very filling but good!
We drove on into New Hampshire and through the White Mountain National Forest to stop for the evening at our Twin Mountain / Mt. Washington KOA. We settled into our cabin and let the kids play on the playground for a bit before heading out to explore nearby Littleton, NH. It is a very picturesque small town with lots of cool things for such a small town. We particularly enjoyed the Schilling Brewery for some delicious pizza and brews. Then we checked out the local candy store and took walk through their covered bridge along the river.
We went back to our campground for another family evening around the fire.
Day 14 Carroll, NH to Waterbury, VT
This was a pretty short driving day but we turned it into a longer one because we had a few extra places to go on the way to Waterbury. We had to swing by the town where I was born, I won’t add that to your road trip because it is just a tiny town with sentimental value to me. We also wanted to meet a friend for lunch in Meredith, New Hampshire. If you feel like exploring a bit more of New Hampshire, Meredith is a pretty town located on Lake Winnipesaukee. We had lunch over looking the lake and then got ice cream and walked around.
Then we continued on to our campground in Little River, a Vermont State Park. We checked in and set up and they gave us the heads up about bears and making sure to store food and toiletries properly in order to avoid attracting bears. We had our German Shepherd with us so we didn’t think too much about that. We went down and checked out the beach after we set up camp. There was beautiful lake and mountains.
Then we had dinner in Waterbury, Vermont. While it is not a huge bustling town, it is full of amazing restaurants, bars, and ice cream stands. Foodies and craft beer and drink lovers rejoice! We had a delicious dinner at the Prohibition Pig. Two thumbs up from all of us!
Then another evening around the campfire. Did I tell you my husband is the best as telling scary stories?
Day 15 Waterbury, VT
We started off the morning right with some apple cider donuts at Cold Hollow Cider Mill. That is a real delicious New England classic so make sure to get some! They also had lots of local and Vermont made products so we picked up some special bread, cheese, and cute kitchen towels and then we spent a really fun day reconnecting with my relatives.
My husband squeezed in some exploration time and took a trip up the Alchemist Brewery. He is huge into home brewing so he lives for stuff like this. He says they only give out samples, you can’t buy glasses of beer, and they sell the beer unpasteurized so he would suggest you bring a cooler with you to keep your loot fresh! He also says to make the trip to Stowe worth it, you should visit the nearby Von Trapp Brewery and enjoy some fresh brews and ambiance.
Little Rivers Campground Bear Story:
That night as we were going to sleep in or tent at the Little Rivers Campground, we heard a man shout bear and then start barking and howling like a dog. My son was already asleep and my daughter only heard the dog noises. She was highly annoyed by what she thought was their buffoonery that time of night and I told her not to worry about it and to go to sleep. Meanwhile, my husband and I listened intently to see what was going on without worrying her. We heard cars pulling out and leaving and we heard the hounds come by. We heard what I thought were gun shots but my husband told me were fire crackers to scare the bear. Then eventually the noise died down.
We had our big German Shepherd Scout with us so we weren’t too worried and we went to sleep eventually too. In the middle of the night, Scout starts to bark like crazy and I started to shut him up but then I remembered the bear so I let him have at it barking with his huge bellowing bark. After a few minutes I figure, he has probably got the bear scared off so I decide to make a run for the bathroom. The car in the next tent site over pulls out and the woman says, “Did you see that?! There was a bear on my car!” Wowzer. She said Scout’s barking scared it away but the bear still scared her away. It was quite an adventurous night!
Day 16 Montpelier
Montpelier is the capital city of Vermont and it is a very pretty Vermont town. They have lots of shops and restaurants to walk around and look at. They also have a great outdoor Farmer’s Market with all kinds of fresh produce, baked goods, fresh food, and hand-crafted items.
We also planned to explore Burlington, Vermont on this day but there was a big festival going on and for some reason my husband didn’t feel like battling with traffic so we just stayed at the campground beach and relaxed for the afternoon portion of the day.
That evening we enjoyed another fabulous meal in Waterbury. This time it was at The Resevoir. We chopped down some Steamed PEI Mussels in a delicious sauce and feasted on some ice cream from The Udder Guys Ice Cream Trike. Delish!
Day 17 Waterbury, VT to Boston, MA
We started off the morning with some fantastic artisan pastries from Red Hen Baking Co. So, so good! Then we zipped down to our reasonable pet-friendly hotel- Hyatt Place Boston/Medford and then out for some lunch at Tenoch Mexican which was delish.
Then we hit the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile route through downtown Boston that leads you to 16 historically significant sites. I was super excited to show my kids around Boston and let them soak up the history at the same time. We got the Freedom Trail Map at the Boston Common Visitor Information Center and then we followed the trail which has markers in the sidewalk at points of interest. There was lots to learn about history on the signs, lots of shopping, and lots of places to try out the food. It was a great way to get acquainted with Boston and enjoy the city by foot. We passed the the whole afternoon there before heading back to the hotel to relax that evening.
Day 18 Boston, MA
I had heard it was really a nice museum so we visited the USS Constitution Museum. But it was closed! We still enjoyed getting to see “Old Ironsides” herself and reading all the informational signs with the history. After a walk around the area, we headed over to the Yankee Lobster Co. We got some lunch (the best Lobster mac n cheese ever). Then, my son threw some tea leaves into the Boston Harbor just for kicks!
Next up, my husband checked out the Night Shift Brewery for a flight of craft brews. Then we spent the evening meeting up with old friends, so that day flew by!
Day 19 Boston, MA
In the morning, we visited Castle Island in South Boston. It was really pretty and so relaxing by the water. I loved the beach and nice green grass area to sit on. It is a beautiful spot to watch the boats on the water go by. We checked out the old Independence Fort and walked around the enjoying the view of the harbor.
That afternoon we checked out the Blaschka Glass Flowers exhibit at the Harvard Museum of Natural History. It was absolutely stunning. Then my kids wanted to go through the rest of the museum soaking up every last ounce of goodness. Seriously, I when I go to museums I always get tired before my kids. I try to prepare my kids by saying, “You don’t have to read every single sign and examine each exhibit. You can just focus on the ones you like best because otherwise we will be here all day.” And they nod at me as they continue to read the entire sign and look at everything! Then they proceed to do that over and over until I am three rooms ahead of them and have to go back to find them! We eventually made it outside again so I could show them Harvard Square.
We had a lovely dinner at The Painted Burro in Davis Square. It was so fun to meet up with a very good friend of mine from high school.
Day 20 Boston, MA to Utica, New York to Buffalo, NY
We broke up our drive from Boston to Buffalo, by stopping in Utica for lunch. The restaurant was in a small town in a working neighborhood, nothing fancy, but good food. If you are passing through that area, it is worth a stop- Zeina’s.
Then we continued on to our campground in Buffalo, Branches of Niagara Campground & Resort. It was a really nice spot with a couple of pools, a lake where some people were canoeing, and lots of yard games like horseshoes and cornhole. There was also a playground and a tetherball court. We passed the afternoon and evening there just relaxing, playing, and swimming after our drive.
Day 21 Buffalo, NY to Pittsburg, PA
This was our day to explore Niagra Falls and we set off bright and early. First we went to the American side in Niagra Falls State Park which was absolutely beautiful and we were lucky enough to catch a rainbow too (short video clip here)!
Then we went to the Canadian Side to make sure we got to see Niagra Falls from that angle too. Both views were stunning. So was the view from the boat that brings you up close to the falls!
Next, we ate some wings at the Anchor Bar, the famed birthplace of the Buffalo chicken wing!
Then we zipped on down to Pittsburg where we checked out the city on the drive in. Then we checked into our hotel- Residence Inn by Marriott Pittsburgh University/Medical Center. It was pet-friendly and had a great pool and nice view of the city. We relaxed at the pool for a bit.
That evening we headed on down to the Strip District of Pittsburg. We found parking and wandered along until we found Primanti Bros. Then we pigged out on some good eats- big sandwiches with Smallman Street Fries.
Day 22 Pittsburg, PA to Cincinnati, OH, to Nashville, TN
We broke up the ride by stopping in Cincinnati at the Madtree Brewery. We pigging out on some great wood oven pizza there. They had a pretty, open courtyard area where dogs are allowed. My husband always visits Madtree when he is in Cincinnati so you know it has his craft brew approval!
Northeastern Road Trip Conclusion
Those are the details on our three week Northeast road trip! Tag me @familyfocusblog if you have questions!
Since writing this, I get lots of questions about certain portions of our northeast road trip. I do realize that most people will have shorter road trips in mind. No worries! It is very easy to plan shorter Northeastern road trip by selecting just the locations you are interested in.
For example, lots of people want to know about a road trip from Montreal to Bar Harbor or conversely from Bar Harbor to Montreal. In that case, you can refer to just that portion of my Northeast road trip itinerary. That would have been Day 7-13 for me. We spent 3 days exploring Montreal and then 3 hours driving to Quebec, 2 days exploring Quebec City, and then 5.5 hours driving to Bar Harbor where we spent to days. So you can drive straight from Montreal to Bar Harbor in 6 hr 14 min or you can detour up to Quebec and then down to Bar Harbor like we did and that whole drive will be about 8 and half hours but you will break it with your explorations.
Other popular portions of this road trip I get asked about are Toronto to Bar Harbour, Montreal to Ann Arbor, and Boston to Bar harbor road trip. Feel free to use the details I provided to plan out your own shortened versions of these family road trip ideas for the Northeast.
