Bat Paper Plate Craft Tutorial
Kids often enjoy bat crafts because they bring a fun and creative twist to learning about these fascinating creatures. Crafting bats allows children to explore their imaginations while improving fine motor skills through cutting, gluing, and coloring. Bats are a popular subject, especially around Halloween, adding a bit of seasonal excitement. Through a bat craft, kids can engage with themes like nocturnal animals and ecosystems, sparking curiosity about wildlife. Plus, the end result can be used as a playful decoration, giving children a sense of pride in their handiwork!
Paper Plate Bat Craft Supplies Needed:
- Black Paper Plate
- White and Black Construction Paper
- Glue Stick
- Scissors
- Pen and/or Pencil
We used a black paper plate because I have preschool age children and it keeps the mess down. However, you could also use a plain white paper plate and let them cover it in black paint and then wait for it to dry before proceeding.
We used white paper, marker, and black paper to make the eyes but you could use googly eyes for this easy bat craft if you happen to have some on hand. They tend to make even a simple craft so much fun for kids.
Directions For How To Make A Paper Plate Bat:
Gather your supplies and head to the table. First, start with your black construction paper. Draw a set of wings for your bat. Or if drawing wing shapes is not your thing you can use this free printable bat template. Then, just cut the wings off the free printable and trace onto the black construction paper. Next, draw 2 ears and two small circles for the bat’s pupils. Grab your scissors and carefully cut out the bat wings, ears (two small black triangles), and eye pupils.
*If your child is good with his/her scissors, let them cut the objects out. If they are just learning how to cut, on a separate piece paper, draw a few shapes and let them practice cutting using safety scissors while you cut out the bat pieces.
Next, grab your white paper. Cut out some teeth if you want to make a paper plate vampire bat. Then cut out the two larger parts of the eyes for your bat.
Once everything is cut out, grab your glue stick and start glueing your bat pieces onto the bat body (your black paper plate). Children love helping glue and glue sticks aren’t too messy so definitely let them join in at this point!
Once you have glued all your bat pieces onto the paper plate, you have a finished Paper Plate Bat! My kids chose to hang theirs on their bedroom doors but your child’s bat would even look good displayed in a larger area of your house like the kitchen or living room for everyone to enjoy!
Conclusion
Paper plate crafts are fantastic for kids because they are versatile, affordable, and accessible. These crafts encourage creativity, as paper plates can be transformed into countless designs—from animals and masks to flowers and seasonal decorations. Crafting with paper plates also enhances fine motor skills as kids cut, paint, glue, and assemble their projects. The simple materials make it easy for kids to dive in, express themselves, and experiment without worrying about perfection. Additionally, paper plate crafts are often quick to make, providing a satisfying sense of accomplishment as young children see their projects come to life in just a short time.
