While I love drooling over the higher end decorative pieces at the department stores and in catalogs, I stop short at the price. So the next best thing (and often times even better) is to make it yourself at home. Upcycling is a green choice that saves money! Furthermore, it makes it so easy to coordinate items to match your current home decor and theme. I will share with you here a step by step tutorial for how to upcycle an old sweater and turn it into an adorable sweater vase.
This sweater vase is so fun and seasonal for fall right into winter. It is a great way to upcycle an old sweater. I used several different fabrics to create some interesting texture contrast. You can put real or silk flowers in the vase, whatever you prefer. I actually had some silk fall flowers set aside for it but decided I liked the simplicity of tiny branches gathered from the yard instead. This upcycled sweater vase can be altered with every season or holiday to make it a year round decoration.
How To Upcycle Old Sweater Into A DIY Sweater Vase
Upcycled Sweater Vase Craft Supplies:
Your sweater vase a great way to welcome Fall or Winter into your home with a cozy feel. You just need a few basic craft supplies for this DIY vase project.
- Large open top vase
- sweater (old one that has gotten messed up or that you got at the thrift store)
- burlap
- 2” lace ribbon
- hot glue gun/glue
- scissors
How To Make An Upcycled Sweater Vase:
Cut sleeve off of sweater so that it is an extra 3”-4” more than the height of the vase.
Slide it down over the vase, hemmed sleeve first so that it just comes to bottom of vase.
Fold excess sweater inside. You may need to cut off additional excess if you are going to put live flowers and water inside so that you have ample room without getting the fabric wet.
Measure width around vase and cut your burlap to ½” longer.
Fray burlap on the top and bottom seam by pulling off several horizontal threads.
Wrap around center of vase and secure with hot glue, try to match your burlap seam with the sweaters seam (you can hide this in back).
Cut a piece of lace to the same length and line up your seam with the others, hold in place with hot glue.
Fill with whatever you hand-silk or real flowers, eucalyptus, wheat, or small limbs like i did- you could even spray paint them gold or leave them natural.
Conclusion
