Pete Nelson Treehouse Masters Interview
Pete Nelson was kind enough to answer a few exclusive questions for me. I was curious about his background and how he became a designer and builder of world renowned treehouses.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an architect.
I’d love to know about your first experience with a treehouse.
I must have been about seven when my dad helped build my first treehouse. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was in our back yard in Ridgewood, NJ in a three-stemed maple tree. It seemed like it was 20 feet up. However, I bet it was only about 8 feet off the ground. It may have been tiny but it was all my own.
What was the first treehouse you built like?
The first treehouse I built on my own was in the front yard of the same house in NJ. It was my look out. Small, but strong. No roof. My sister climbed up and immediately spotted a truly remarkable WWII artifact hidden in the pachysandra below. It was an unexploded 30 lb fin-tailed bomb! The bomb squad came out and took it away! It was a BIG DEAL! And I wasn’t even the one to find it!
Did you ever have any idea that you would be a treehouse master as a job?
Not in a million years!
