Each month, I know that it is time for me to change the furnace filter. I usually have no idea what I am doing and I wander down the aisle at Publix or Ace wondering what the difference really is between all the different filters and all the different prices. This time I decided to do some research online first and I found Filters USA. I was browsing around and found some great information there about MERV Ratings and some great air filters with high Merv ratings. Filters USA did provided an Accumulair air filter to facilitate my review.
I was provided with filters in the hopes that I would share my honest opinions. I received no monetary compensation for this review and the opinions expressed are my own.
What is a Merv Rating?
First, you may be wondering what a merv rating is. Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, commonly known as MERV Rating is a measurement scale designed in 1987 by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to rate the effectiveness of air filters.
Why I Chose An Air Filter With High Merv Rating
The scale is designed to represent the worst case performance of a furnace filter when dealing with particles in the range of 0.3 to 10 micrometres. The MERV rating is from 1 to 16. Higher MERV ratings correspond to a greater percentage of particles captured on each pass, with a MERV 16 filter capturing more than 95% of particles over the full range. This made it really simple for me. I want a high MERV because I like breathing clean air! (By the way, did you know that indoor air is a surprising two to five times more polluted than outdoor air?) However, high merv filters do tend to be more expensive. While I don’t go for the highest MERV air filter available, I do like to go pretty high- usually a MERV 13 is my sweet spot for efficiency and price.
Accumulair Air Filters
When looking for air filters with a high Merv rating, I discovered Accumulair furnace filters which are pleated, 3-month, electrostatically charged filters that are great for capturing airborne allergens. Accumulair air filters are chemical free so you never have to worry about the addition of unnecessary chemicals to your air. Furthermore, Accumulair filter material is designed so that it will not support the development of mold, mildew, bacteria, or other microorganisms in normal use. Since I am looking for a way to help reduce airborne allergens such as bacteria, particles that carry viruses, pollen, mold spores, fine dust, and pet dander I decided that the Accumulair Diamond MERV 13 Furnace Filter was right for my home. I also love that Accumulair air filters are made in the USA.
Accumulair air filters consist of over 200+ sizes and are available in 1″, 2″, 4″, and 6″. In addition, Accumulair air filters can be custom made to your exact size! You can purchase Accumulair™ furnace filters online at sites like airfilters.com or in your local hardware store.
It was nice having the Accumuliar air filters delivered to me by Filters USA! Another great thing about delivery is you can arrange to get them on auto-ship. This is great so you don’t forget to change them each month. The whole house feels less stuffy. I feel more confident knowing that the filter is helping to get rid of allergens and pet dander.
How Often Air Filter Change?
Changing your filter regularly is important not only for the quality of the air your breathe. It also helps with the efficiency of you HVAC and reduces strain on the motor! Most air filters will suggest you change them monthly. Some high merv filters may say good up to three months. I find that at least once a month is a good idea if you live with more than one person or with any pets. More traffic, more activity, and more pet dander means you will need to change more frequently. Air filters start off white. Once they become covered with a layer of brownish or grayish dust, it is time to change your air filter.

Why Changing Air Filters For House In A Timely Fashion Is So Important
There are two main reasons that changing home air filters each month is so important. The first is for your health and the second is for your wallet.
How Changing Air Filter Impacts Your Health
We all spend a lot of time in our houses and clean air is important for everyone. Even more so if you have members of your family that are prone to allergies, asthma, or catching colds. According to the EPA, “indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air,” and “Children are more susceptible to the effects of contaminated air because they breathe in more oxygen relative to their body weight than adults.” The EPA further states that indoor air pollutants may be the cause of symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, infection and irritation of the eyes, nose and respiratory tract.
A home air filter works in conjunction with your home’s HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system. The air filters for house serve to filter the air. The best home air filters remove bacteria and other harmful particles (like dust, pet dander, and smoke) from the air that we breathe. Changing your home air filter on time is a no brainer when you realize just what it is doing to protect your air quality and health. So is using a filter with a high MERV rating!
How Changing Air Filter Impacts Your Wallet
The air filters for house are catching harmful particles and keeping them out of your breathing air. They are also keeping them out of your HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). Clean filters help your HVAC system to run more efficiently. This means it costs less to operate and keeps HVAC repair costs to a minimum. Keeping clean air filters is the single most effective way to improve HVAC efficiency which translates to a lower monthly energy bill.
Air filters for house that are clogged with dust and grime make the HVAC work harder as it tries to suck air through the build up. This raises your energy bill and can result in your furnace needing repairs or quitting on you. And let me just tell you that HVAC systems are super expenses to replace (we’re talking thousands of dollars). According to the EPA, regular filter changes cut 5% – 10% off your energy bill every month!
