Some of my favorite childhood memories are of picking wild blackberries along a two track road near the lake. To this day if I close my eyes when I taste a fresh blackberry it takes me right back to that place and time. Now, I take my children berry picking. It’s so much fun to watch their excitement when they find a good spot that’s plentiful. The wild blackberries aren’t quite in season yet here but the fresh berries at the farmer’s market or grocery store are great for making Blackberry Cobbler. I love dessert and this easy blackberry cobbler recipe is made in a jar for the perfect individual servings!

Easy Recipe For Blackberry Cobbler With Cake Mix

Making cobbler with cake mix is a simple and delicious dessert hack. It is fun to experiment with different fruit combinations and cake mix flavors to customize your cobbler to your taste preferences. You’ll love making cobbler with a cake mix because there is no need to measure out flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt separately—the cake mix already has the dry ingredients blended in perfect proportions. Cake mixes are formulated to bake evenly and rise well, so even inexperienced bakers can get a light, fluffy topping. In addition, cake mix cobblers tend to taste more like a sweet hybrid of cobbler and cake, which some people prefer over a more biscuit-like traditional cobbler. It works especially well for sweetening up tart blackberries.

Blackberry Cobbler Dessert Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • 1/2 stick of unsalted butter
  • 1 white or yellow cake mix (you’ll use only half the box)

This recipe serves 4. Double for 8 portions.

For baking, I suggest using individual-sized, oven-safe bakeware (such as ramekins or Pyrex glass dessert dishes). I just love jar recipes because I think they are so cute so I used wide-mouth Mason jars labeled as “tempered” or “for canning”. Brands like Ball and Kerr make canning jars designed to handle heat changes. Here is my affiliate Amazon link to oven safe jars- still keep oven temperature at 350°F (175°C) or below.

If you wish to use frozen blackberries, add them straight from the freezer so they don’t release too much juice before baking. Add an 5-8 extra minutes to the bake time to account for the colder fruit.

How To Make Blackberry Cobbler:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Divide the blackberries between the 4 oven-safe ramekins, covering the bottom of each individual dish.

Sprinkle the dry cake mix over the juicy blackberries. I use approximately 3 tbsp in each ramekin. The cake mix does not have to be pretty or evenly sprinkled.  Just top the berries and tap the oven-safe dish to help it settle a bit.

Melt the butter in the microwave and drizzle melted butter over the berries and cake mix. Do not stir—this creates the cobbler’s signature topping texture.

Place jars on a rimmed sheet pan with a bit of water to reduce temperature shock and catch spills. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the cobbler crust becomes golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool until the glass is safe to touch. Usually about 10–15 minutes before serving works well.

Serve this delicious dessert right in the ramekin for a perfect portion.  It can be served warm, at room temperature, or chilled.

I’m sure it would be amazing served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top or homemade whipped cream as well.
