Homemade sorbet is a delightful and refreshing treat, especially during the warmer months and summer is the season to eat melons! Because melons are in season, you will find the freshest, most ripe, and most delicious melons during the summer months. Cantaloupe is in season in the United States from June thru August so it has to travel less (fewer carbon emissions) to get to you. Make sure you enjoy some of this seasonal fruit that is high in Vitamin A and C. Cantaloupes are delicious simply peeled, seeded, and diced. However, this cantaloupe ginger sorbet is really an extra special treat for your summer dinner guests. This basic sorbet recipe requires only 4 simple ingredients.

Cantaloupe Ginger Sorbet (or Popsicles) Recipe:

The cantaloupe ginger sorbet recipe does require an ice cream maker to get a smooth sorbet texture but if you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can still use the same recipe and pour it into popsicle molds for cantaloupe ginger popsicles. The popsicles are also delicious and a great way to get your kids to enjoy cantaloupe. The slight taste of ginger is a great contrast to the sweetness of the sorbet and is very refreshing.

Prep: 10 minutes
Freeze: Depending on the ice cream maker 30-60 minutes or the freezer 2-4 hours
Yields: 6 to 8 servings

Sorbet Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of peeled, seeded, and cubed cantaloupe
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger (This will give a milder taste that most children will like better, or you can bump it up to 2 tsps if you know everyone is a ginger lover.)

How To Make Sorbet

Create a simple syrup by bringing the water to a boil in a small pot and adding the sugar. Stir until melted and then remove from heat. Pour into a pyrex dish or measuring cup and place in the refrigerator to allow to cool.

Place cantaloupe chunks in a high-speed blender or food processor along with the fresh ginger and cooled simple syrup (water with sugar dissolved) and blend. When the fruit purée is a nice smooth consistency, you can stop blending.

If you are making popsicles, simply pour the cantaloupe puree into the popsicle molds and freeze.

If you are making sorbet, pour the cantaloupe puree into your ice cream maker and follow manufactures’s instructions. When the sorbet is done, you can place it in a reusable container and place it in the freezer to become more firm.

Then scoop and enjoy your cantaloupe ginger sorbet.

If you are feeling naughty, you can pour a shot of vodka over it for a delicious and extra special treat!

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of cantaloupe
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine water and sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar completely dissolves. Let the syrup cool. You can speed the cooling process along by placing the syrup in a pyrex dish in the refrigerator while you remove the skin and seeds from your cantaloupe and chop it into small squares.
  2. In a blender or food processor, combine the small cantaloupe chucks, simple syrup, and ginger. Blend until smooth.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate until well chilled, 1-3 hours.
  4. Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a sorbet consistency, about 20-30 minutes.
  5. Transfer the sorbet to an airtight container and freeze for at least 2 hours or until firm.
  6. Scoop the sorbet into bowls or cones and enjoy!

Benefits of Sorbet

Sorbet is good for several reasons:

  1. Refreshing: Sorbet is icy and light, making it a perfect treat for hot weather. The cold temperature and fruity flavors can be very refreshing and satisfying.
  2. Low in fat: Sorbet is typically made with just fruit, sugar, and water, making it naturally low in fat. It’s a great option for those looking for a lighter dessert.
  3. Dairy-free: Unlike ice cream, sorbet doesn’t contain any dairy products, which makes it a suitable choice for people who are lactose intolerant or following a vegan diet.
  4. Versatile: Sorbet can be made with a variety of fruits, allowing for endless flavor possibilities. You can also add herbs, spices, or other ingredients to create unique flavor combinations.
  5. Simple to make: Homemade sorbet is relatively easy to make with just a few ingredients and simple equipment like a blender and ice cream maker. You can customize it to suit your taste preferences and dietary needs.
  6. More Fruit: Sorbet is a fun way to add more fruits to your diet. You can experiment with different summer fruits and flavors to use what you have on hand to create your own unique sorbet! Raspberry sorbet is another favorite of mine. A squeeze of citrus juice such as lime juice or lemon juice over the sorbet is often an extra delicious way to add more vitamin C.

Conclusion

Overall, sorbet is a delicious and refreshing dessert that can be enjoyed by nearly everyone, making it a popular choice for many occasions. Have you ever made a sorbet before? What is your favorite kind? I hope you enjoy this homemade fruit sorbet on a hot summer day and share a picture on social media @familyfocusblog!
