This homemade ornament is so cute and so easy to make. You create beautifully decorated gingerbread ornaments that will impress everyone. They are fun to make with family members and have each person add their name to the backside or bottom in order to create great keepsake ornaments.
DIY Gingerbread Ornaments Supplies Needed:
- plastic ball ornament (available through my affiliate amazon link or your local craft store)
- brown spray paint
- pretty ribbon
- bakers twine
- craft glue
- white paint pen
- red paint pen
- black paint pen
- painters tape
If you don’t have paint pens, you could use puffy paint instead to make these gingerbread Christmas ornaments.
How To Make Gingerbread Ornaments
Wrap painters tape around silver hanging portion of ball ornament to protect from paint. Or remove it if it comes off easily.
Wipe down the ornament quickly with rubbing alcohol to remove all oil and fingerprints, giving paint a better surface for it to adhere.
Lightly spray ball with an even coat of brown spray paint, creating a tack coat. The easiest way I have found to paint ornaments like this is to hang them up in a tree outside, this allows you access to all sides and lets it dry more evenly.
Let paint dry for 5 minutes, then add 1-2 more coats, drying each time until desired coverage has been reached. If you prefer you can also paint it with acrylic paint and a brush.
After you have painted on final coat wait at least an hour before putting on details.
Draw “icing” in a circle on the front of your ornament with a fine tipped white paint pen to define the face of your gingerbread man.
Use paint pens to add button eyes, a sweet smile, and red cheeks.
Use a touch of glue to add a bakers twine bow to the top for a girl ornament, or make a bow tie for a gingerbread boy ornament.
Allow paint to dry fully, add a ribbon for a hanger. Or you could use ornament hooks if you prefer.
Don’t forget to personalize your gingerbread ornament with the name of the maker and the year!
