I’m a sucker for a good lip product and need to steer clear of the lip balm aisle when I go to the store from now on. There are so many to choose from and new ones are on the shelf it seems like every week. The downside of most lip balms is that they have 15-20 ingredients! I can’t even pronounce some of them. Why all the ingredients in such a simple product? After looking at labels and reading them lately, I decided to try my hand at making my own. It was surprisingly easy. Here is how to make your own Moisturizing Lip Balm! This DIY lip balm recipe is simple to make and all natural.
DIY Lip Balm Recipe
Making your own homemade lip balm is a fun and simple way to keep your lips soft, smooth, and chemical-free. With just a few natural ingredients—like shea butter, and coconut oil—you can whip up a nourishing balm that’s perfect for daily use or gifting. Whether you want to customize the scent or just know exactly what you’re putting on your skin, this DIY lip balm recipe gives you full control and lasting results.
Natural Ingredients needed for Homemade Lip Balm Recipe:
- Organic Coconut Oil
- Organic Shea Butter
- Young Living Lavender Essential Oil (orange essential oil is another good choice)
This is a beginner’s recipe for making your own lip balm. It purposefully uses simple ingredients so you don’t need things like a double boiler or beeswax pellets.
A word of advice, not all essential oils are equal. I suggest using Young Living essential oils because they are high-quality oils that are pure. I am distributor if you want to order, learn more, or ask questions, reach out to me on Instagram.
After you make your homemade lip balm, you will need something to store it in. You may use empty lip balm tins, small cosmetic containers with lids, or lip balm tubes. All of these options can reused from empty beauty products you have or ordered new on Amazon (affiliate link).
How To Make Lip Balm:
Gather your ingredients in the kitchen. Grab a small microwavable bowl and add 1/2 teaspoon of your coconut oil and 1/2 teaspoon of your shea butter into the bowl. Microwave in 20 second increments until the oils are completely melted. Remove from microwave and gently stir. Add 1 drop of lavender essential oil and mix all together.
Once your oils are completely mixed, pour into your small container. Your small container can be a small tin, cosmetic tub, or you can reuse old lip balm containers.
This recipe makes approximately 1 teaspoon of product. Let your balm cool for 2-3 hours or until completely hardened.
The oils in this lip balm are amazing for all skin types. The lavender essential oil is soothing and gentle. I just love essential oils and making my own products with them!
The coconut oil & shea butter are full of vitamins that are very moisturizing and healing for dry skin. I especially love this lip balm in the summer when lips can be parched from sun exposure. I have actually made a few lip balms and have them stashed in different places including my purse.
*The oils in this lip balm will melt in extreme heat. Keep in a cool dry place for best results.
Conclusion
Creating your own DIY lip balm is not only easy and affordable but also offers the benefit of using natural, skin-loving ingredients you can trust. By making it yourself, you avoid harsh chemicals, customize the scent and texture to your liking, and even reduce waste with reusable containers. Whether you’re making it for personal use or as thoughtful handmade gifts, homemade lip balm is a rewarding way to care for your lips while embracing a more natural and sustainable lifestyle. It is a great way to kiss your dry lips goodbye and say hello to soft, moisturized lips.
