Have you ever wanted something and gotten crafty but didn’t quite know what to call it? Well, that is what happened when this wooden crate DIY project was first published March 22, 2015. Liz wanted to add some colorful decor to her front porch so she decided to get crafting with some wooden crates and create attractive wooden boxes that could be used as plant stands or even as outdoor furniture to hold your drink! We called these pretty creations DIY outdoor planter boxes as the time but now I think maybe DIY plant stands would be more fitting. Or maybe even just decorative crates. Whatever you call them, these crates make lovely front porch or back patio decor. You could even use them inside if you enjoy a simple boho style. Anyway, here are the crate craft photos and instructions.
DIY Outdoor Planter Boxes Tutorial- Makes Great Patio Decor
This is a step-by-step tutorial for DIY outdoor planter boxes- great patio decor! Spring is here and summer is on the way. Everything just seems more colorful and brighter during spring and summer. So why not start decorating for these great seasons?! My favorite place to be during this time of the year is outside and my porch was in dire need of some color and life. Planters can be the cure for a bland lifeless porch or outdoor setting. These DIY planters give a homey feeling and can be personalized to your liking! These DIY plant stands are great for your personal enjoyment and they will help spruce the place up a bit for your backyard parties. I hope you give this a try and have just as much fun as I did while making them. Now all I need is a little plant collection…enjoy!
DIY Plant Stand Craft Supplies:
- Wooden boxes
- Spray paint
- Stencils
- Paintbrush
- Tarp
- Wood optional
- Staple gun optional
You will want to buy spray paints that are good for outdoor wood furniture use. In this way your planter boxes can endure outdoor elements without chipping or peeling. There are many options for this but one such choice is Rust-Oleum Universal All Surface Spray Paint in Oil-Rubbed Bronze Metallic. Another suggestion is Krylon Colormaster Indoor/Outdoor Aerosol Paint. Here is my affiliate Amazon link. Alternatively, you can shop for at your local home improvement store such as Home Depot or craft Store such as Michael’s. Thrift stores are another great way to find supplies on a budget.
How To Make Decorative Crates For Functional Porch Decor:
First thing is first you will need to get wooden boxes. You can easily make them or buy them. I bought mine, but if you want to go big or want a certain shape you can always make them.
Choose some base colors. I went with coral, white and a very bold blue. I went with my porch theme but the colors are also perfect for summer time!
Now it is time to pull out your stencils. I suggest going with various shapes and sizes. I personally went with henna design type stencils to go with the theme of my porch.
You can either spray paint the stencils or use paint and a paintbrush. I liked the look of spray paint more because it tends to look more rustic and it is a faster process.
Once you are done with the color and you like the look of your boxes use a UV clear sealing spray if you will be using them as outdoor plant stands. This will protect them from the weather and extend the life of your creation.
I did not glue, staple or nail my boxes together. I suggest this because it gives you more options while decorating now and later!
Now all you need are plant pots! I hope you enjoy!

Decorative wooden crates can be a versatile and stylish addition to your home decor. Besides being used a simple planter stand, decorative crates can also be used for storage. Use wooden crates to store books, magazines, blankets, or other items. Stack them or arrange them in different configurations for a unique look. You can even used the boxes as planters. Just line a crate with plastic to use it as a planter for the perfect plant.
Another idea? Stack crates to create a side table or coffee table. You can leave them as-is or add a tabletop for a more finished look. Place it in a perfect place by your seat or fill an empty corner.
