Easily Capture Your Family Story With Keepsake Memory Books From StoryWorth
Have you ever wondered how your granddad met your gramma? Or why your father chose his profession? Or maybe why your parents chose your name? I bet you know the answers to some of those questions. You probably feel a huge sense of comfort and nostalgia just thinking of the story that answers that question and recalling the family member who shared it with you. Like me, however, you may not know the answer to one of those questions.
Let’s face it- family, even with all of their imperfections, are the what matters most. The love of family members is one of life’s greatest blessings. And the memories we have of our family are something we will always cherish. It is the little family stories that will always stick with us and make us smile to tell them and to hear them. Sharing family stories is part of our family heritage, part of knowing who we are and where we come from. Family stories are also a key to understanding how people became the way they are, what motivates them, and what shaped them.
I lost both of my grandmothers a couple of years ago. They were both amazing women. Very different in many ways but similar in their strength of character. There are questions that cross my mind sometimes that I will never get to ask them. There are also stories they told me just once that I wish I had recorded so I could remember the details more clearly now.
So when I found StoryWorth, I thought I would see if my mom would be into creating a memory keepsake book to record her family story. That I would always have it and be able to share it with my kids and grandkids. She agreed and it has been really eye-opening so far.
What Do You Write In A Memory Book?
StoryWorth has lists of meaningful story prompts to chose from and they send her one question each week. Then each week I get a story of my mom’s life and it turns out there are many things I did not know and never thought to ask!
I am really enjoying hearing my mother’s answers to the StoryWorth story prompts that I chose. There are a surprising number of things I don’t really know about my mother and reading some of her family story has actually made me cry- tears of joy as I feel closer to her and tears of sadness as I wonder why I never asked these questions! Another surprising bonus of her sharing her family story is that I get to learn things about my grandmother too.
Here is one story she shared and I just loved this little peek into her childhood:
In answer to “How did you get your first job?”
“One of the first jobs I remember was a job my mother offered me and my brother Dale. We wanted to save money to buy a surrey to be pulled by our Shetland pony, Wildfire. Mother said we could pull all the dead stalks out of her row of daylillies which lined the entire very long driveway. It was rather a formidable task. I think we got paid by the bundle of stalks we collected. It taught us how to work to together, to be persistent and not give up. It was outdoors and we felt pretty contented as we worked next to the lake and the pasture where our pony looked on as we pulled and stacked the stalks. Mother was pleased and so were we.”
For one of the questions, my mom decided to record her answer by phoning her answer in to StoryWorth. It was really special to hear her voice telling her story of her first big family trip. I could just hear the joy in her voice as she recalled her trip to the Grand Tetons and her amazement at seeing the geysers shoot up out of the ground. Even more poignant for me was hearing her tell about seeing an artist painting the landscape and realizing that was what she really wanted to do- “I wanted to learn to capture my rapturous feeling of this wild and wonderful place.” It was powerful to understand what initially inspired my mother to be an artist.
I am absolutely enjoying learning more about my mother. It is inspiring me to learn more of all of our family stories and capture them. I think the family story has always been a beautiful part of each family. I fear that as we are all becoming busier and busier and we all have electronic devises to spend our downtime on, we might be losing some of these family stories and forgetting to pass them on.
The holidays are a time to spend with loved ones and as such they are a time of much merriment as we enjoy the company of those we love. Sometimes also of sadness as we miss the company of those who have left us. Memories are the beautiful fingerprints of times of spent together. What better gift than to pass them on to those we love?

I too lost both grandmothers and I would give anything to hear my one grandmother tell her stories again. I love this idea!
