If you’ve ever browsed the natural or organic section of the grocery store, you’ve most likely noticed shelves lined with boxes of non-dairy milk. Soy, rice, hemp, cashew and various nut milks serve as alternatives to cow’s milk, and are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Whether you are lactose intolerant, have issues digesting dairy, or are simply looking to add nutritional variety to your diet, these nut milks are worth trying. My personal favorite nut milk is cashew milk and I will be sharing a recipe for homemade cashew milk with you today.

When I go grocery shopping, I try to make sure I am purchasing foods that are natural and unprocessed. This is where buying non-dairy milk can be tricky. Many of these milks contain carrageenan, which is widely thought to be harmful to one’s health. As with any food that I am unsure of, I often look for ways to make it at home so that I know exactly what is going into it. After much experimenting in my kitchen, I fell in love with cashew milk. Made with just a few ingredients, cashew milk is great in smoothies, over cereal or oatmeal, or straight up in a glass. Best of all, homemade cashew milk is so easy to make!

Here is my recipe for homemade cashew milk. Enjoy!

Homemade Cashew Milk Ingredients

  • ½ cup raw cashews, soaked in water overnight
  • 4 cups filtered water
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • pinch of salt
  • optional: ground flax seeds or hemp seeds

How To Make Cashew Milk:

Cashew milk step 1

Blend the cashews and water together in a blender or food processor.

Now, addd cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to your liking (just a small sprinkle of each). Blend until completely smooth.

Pour your cashew milk into a glass and enjoy.

Pour the extra into a large glass jar and keep refrigerated for up to 3-5 days. Nut milk, without preservatives, can spoil quickly, so make sure to enjoy it while is is fresh.

Since cashews are a soft nut, it is not necessary to strain the milk after blending. If you prefer to use other nuts, you may need to strain the milk through cheesecloth to achieve the desired result.

Cashews in particular make for a deliciously creamy milk!

Health Benefits Of Nut Milk

Today, I am happy have Ron McDiarmid, who is the founder of My Healthy Living Coach to share with us the health benefits of nut milk.

If you’ve recently given up dairy due to dairy intolerance or to become a vegan or you just enjoy a variety of beverages, there are many dairy-free options that can be had. One of these is nut milk. This non-dairy milk alternative is not only delicious, but it’s also healthy. Nut milks are very easy for the body to digest and they contain ingredients that are good for fighting inflammation.

Nut Milk Flavors

You may not know that milk can be made from just about anything, including almonds, walnuts, cashews and the like. It’s likely that almond milk is the most popular kind of nut milk, available in many grocery stores.

You can also make nut milk yourself. But if you’re doing this, using raw nuts – and not roasted – is the key, as they will still have their original amount of moisture.

Is Nut Milk Healthier For You Than Dairy Milk?

Nut milk contains far fewer calories than its dairy milk counterpart. Even when compared with skim milk, nut milk still comes in at 30 calories less per cup. Nut milk has health benefits because it contains Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that are needed to protect the heart and body. You will also find far more vitamins and minerals in nut milk, including zinc, potassium, iron and magnesium. And nut milk is also free from the hormones and animal by-products that can be found in regular dairy milk. This fact alone has caused many to choose nut milk over dairy milk.

Conclusion

Once you’ve made your own nut milk, it’s very easy to enjoy. You can add a pinch of stevia, honey or cocoa to sweeten the nut milk recipe a bit. Or, simply enjoy its natural flavor along with the many health benefits of nut milk! Have you tried nut milks before? Do you think you will try making your own homemade cashew milk now that you know how easy it is and you have a simple cashew milk recipe?
