Leslie Reichert is a green cleaning coach and contributor to publications such as Woman’s World Magazine and Woman’s Day, a frequent home keeping expert on Martha Stewart Living Radio. She is also the author of the book: The Joy Of Green Cleaning.  Today she shares with us a DIY Laundry Soap Recipe that is easy to make and works great.

You’ll love my Great Grandma’s Laundry Soap Recipe- a simple “green” laundry soap that still works as well today as it did back then. With just four simple ingredients, you too, can make your own laundry detergent and keep your family clean and healthy.  I hope you enjoy these simple steps to making your own laundry soap that will keep your family and pets safe from hidden toxins and health risks. Sometimes we get so used to buying things at the store that we never consider how easy it is to make them ourselves. The homemade detergent is a dry mix but you can easily turn it into a DIY liquid laundry soap if you prefer with the simple instructions below.

DIY Laundry Soap Recipe from The Joy Of Green Cleaning:

This DIY laundry soap is so easy to mix up in just a few minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups soap flakes
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup washing soda ( available from Arm & Hammer)
  • 1 cup Borax
  • 15 drops of any essential oil for scent such as lavender (optional)

I get eco-friendly soap flakes – they are vegetable based and very gentle on clothing. You can also make your own by using an Ivory soap bar – just let it dry out and then grate it.

How To Make Laundry Soap:

Making this laundry soap is very easy!  Just mix ingredients together thoroughly and then place in an air tight container!

How To Use Homemade Laundry Soap:

If you have a front loading washing machine you only need to use 1-2 tablespoons of this homemade laundry detergent per load. If you have a top loading washing machine you can use 1/4 cup per load. If you prefer to use a liquid laundry soap instead, you can add this dry laundry soap mixture to very hot water and place in the washing machine.

This DIY laundry soap is very gentle on clothing and is great for people who have sensitive skin.  It is fun to make your own laundry soap and you can let the kids help you too! They love seeing how things are made. This homemade laundry soap is a cost effective, eco-friendly choice. Do you think you will try this laundry soap recipe?
