My hands are always so dry and rough in the winter! I’m sure I’m not the only one who has this happening. I feel like I go through a bottle of lotion a week! I have started using a great homemade exfoliating hand scrub. It works so well to slough off dry dead skin from my hands and leaves them super moisturized and soft after rinsing off. So soft that I don’t use lotion immediately after like I usually would. I use this healing hand scrub recipe once a day and it smells wonderful!

Moisturizing And Exfoliating Hand Scrub Tutorial:

Making your own hand scrub is a simple and rewarding way to care for your skin naturally. By using ingredients you likely already have at home—like sugar, salt, and coconut oil—you can create an effective exfoliant that gently removes dead skin and leaves your hands feeling soft and smooth. Unlike many store-bought options, homemade scrubs are free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, making them a healthier choice for sensitive skin. Plus, you can customize the scent and texture to your liking, turning basic hand care into a relaxing, spa-like experience.

How To Make Hand Scrub:

First, grab your bowl and your sugar. Measure out 1 cup of sugar and place in your bowl.

Next, take your measuring spoon and add 1.5 heaping TBSP of coconut oil and 1/2 TBSP of shea butter. Mix ingredients together.

Once everything is mixed together, add your essential oils. 4 drops of Lemon and 4 drops of Peppermint. You can add a couple more drops if you would like it to be a little stronger or less in order to have a faint scent in your scrub. The 8 drops give it a nice scent that isn’t overpowering!

How To Store Hand Scrub

Transfer the coconut lemon hand scrub into mason jars and tightly secure the lids.

If you want to give them as gifts, tie a bow around the jar for presentation and attach a label. You can print your labels on the computer or hand write them, as desired. Stick the label onto the lid or hole-punch the label and attach it from the ribbon. Be sure to include directions for use on the label or in the card with your gift.

This DIY project takes only about 5 minutes to make!

How To Use Hand Scrub

Scoop a small amount of the hand scrub into your palm and gently massage it onto dry or damp hands in a circular motion, focusing on rough areas like knuckles and cuticles. Continue for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel. Follow up with your favorite hand cream or lotion for extra moisture. Use 1–2 times per week for best results.

Disclaimer:

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. If irritation occurs, discontinue use. Always perform a patch test before using any new product, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Citrus essential oils like lemon may increase sensitivity to sunlight; avoid sun exposure immediately after use. Keep out of reach of children.

I keep my jar beside my sink and just scoop out a little (about a teaspoon) and rub my hands gently together for about 20 seconds or so. Wash with warm water and pat dry. You can use this daily in the morning or evening. This can also be used as a body scrub before you jump in the shower.

Conclusion

Creating your own DIY hand scrub is a simple, affordable way to pamper your skin with natural ingredients you can trust. It not only helps exfoliate and soften rough hands but also gives you the freedom to customize scents and textures to suit your preferences. Whether you’re looking for a thoughtful homemade gift or a nourishing addition to your self-care routine, a handmade scrub is a fun and effective way to keep your hands feeling smooth, refreshed, and cared for.

I love using hand scrubs, but I’ve been made my own. I’m allergic to coconut so I need to find an alternative to that.

You could use avocado oil or apricot oil. They are great for your skin as well.

I have tried similar hand scrubs to this one and actually made about 6 different kinds last year for all of my sister-in-law’s bridesmaids! As a mother of one with one on the way I definitely love sneaking a little time for myself with DIY beauty treatments.

Thank you for this amazing hand scrub recipe and have a blissfully mindful day!
