My mom used to make almond milk for me a lot when I was a kid and I always enjoyed helping her peel the almonds after we soaked them and having the fresh, delicious treat she had made for us. So, today, I am happy have Ron McDiarmid, who is the founder of My Healthy Living Coach to share with us the health benefits of nut milk and a nut milk recipe.
Discover the Health Benefits of Nut Milk
If you’ve recently given up dairy due to dairy intolerance or to become a vegan or you just enjoy a variety of beverages, there are many dairy-free options that can be had. One of these is nut milk. This non-dairy milk alternative is not only delicious, but it’s also healthy. Nut milks are very easy for the body to digest and they contain ingredients that are good for fighting inflammation.
Nut Milk Flavors
You may not know that milk can be made from just about anything, including almonds, walnuts, cashews and the like. It’s likely that almond milk is the most popular kind of nut milk, available in many grocery stores.
You can also make nut milk yourself. But if you’re doing this, using raw nuts – and not roasted – is the key, as they will still have their original amount of moisture.
Is Nut Milk Healthier For You Than Dairy Milk?
Nut milk contains far fewer calories than its dairy milk counterpart. Even when compared with skim milk, nut milk still comes in at 30 calories less per cup. Nut milk has health benefits because it contains Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that are needed to protect the heart and body. You will also find far more vitamins and minerals in nut milk, including zinc, potassium, iron and magnesium. And nut milk is also free from the hormones and animal by-products that can be found in regular dairy milk. This fact alone has caused many to choose nut milk over dairy milk.
Nut Milk Recipe- How to Make Your Own Nut Milk
Those who are concerned about the price to buy ready-made nut milk can make their own. The best thing about making your own nut milk is that no special machinery or knowledge is required. All you need for this nut milk recipe is raw nuts of your choice and some water. When choosing nuts, consider pistachios, almonds, cashews and hazelnuts, as these are among the best. However, you can use any type of nut for this nut milk recipe.
To create milk that has the same consistency as 2% dairy milk, use one cup of raw nuts to two cups of water. For thinner milk, simply add more water.
Soak the nuts overnight in water, and then drain. Combine the nuts and water in a blender, and then blend for 2 minutes. Water that is white and opaque will indicate that the milk is ready. The mixture can then be strained to extract the pulp, which can then be blended again with water in a blender for another 2 minutes. However, after a few times, the moisture of the pulp will be lost, and more nuts may need to be soaked before continuing to make more milk.
Once you’ve made your own nut milk, it’s very easy to enjoy. You can add a pinch of stevia, honey or cocoa to sweeten the nut milk recipe a bit. Or, simply enjoy its natural flavor along with the many health benefits of nut milk! Have you made your own nut milk before? What kind of nut milk is your favorite?
