Weekends are a great time to come together as a family and enjoy a leisurely breakfast all together.  Here is an extra special recipe to prepare for breakfast or brunch.  This orange scone recipe is delicious prepared as a stand alone or for a more hearty breakfast, you can prepare eggs and bacon to go along with it. These orange scones are featured in Elizabeth Stone‘s new cookbook, An Invitation to Entertain: Recipes for Gracious Parties and I am thankful to Bright Sky Press for their permission to reprint it here. The cook book is available for purchase through my affiliate Amazon link.

Yields 12 scones

Ingredients for Orange Scones:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 T baking powder
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 T orange zest

How To Make Orange Scones:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Combine the flour, baking powder and sugar in a food processor.  Add the butter and pulse until the mixture is crumbly. Remove the mixture from the food processor and place in a bowl. Stir the heavy cream and orange zest into the mixture and keep stirring until the mixture is moistened. Knead the mixture on a lightly floured surface about 5-6 times.

Roll to a 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a round cookie cutter. Place 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

OR separate the dough into two balls. Roll each to 1/2 inch thickness and then slice each six ways if you prefer triangular shaped scones.

These delicious orange scones are great served with whip cream as I did above with a few dried currants sprinkled on top of the whipped cream for extra yumminess. They are also great served with an Orange Glaze or Orange Butter if you prefer.

Orange Butter Recipe:

  • ¾ cup (or 1 ½ sticks), softened
  • ¼ cup orange marmalade

In a small mixing bowl, mix together butter and marmalade, using a fork. Blend well. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Orange Glaze Recipe For Scones:

  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  •  1/8 cup orange juice
  •  1 tbsp orange zest
  •  1 tsp melted butter

Mix sugar, OJ, and zest until smooth. Add warm melted butter and stir until smooth. Pour over scones.

Orange Whipped Cream:

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1 tsp sugar

Whip cream, zest, and sugar until it holds peaks.

It begins with vignettes of 24 very different party ideas, from a “Thanksgiving Lunch Seated Buffet” to an “Elegant Christmas Dinner” to a “Winter Ladies Lunch.” After the inspiration of the vignettes, which include flower arranging how-tos, lighting tips, serving suggestions and more, over 200 recipes provide the reader with the ability to mix and match to perfectly tailor each gathering.

Conclusion

Scones are an integral part of British and Irish cuisine, often associated with afternoon tea. They carry a sense of tradition and nostalgia, which adds to their appeal. Scones are often enjoyed with accompaniments like clotted cream, butter, jam, or honey. They can also be paired with tea or coffee, making them a versatile choice for breakfast, brunch, or a snack. Scones have a unique texture that is both crumbly and tender. When made correctly, they have a light, flaky exterior with a soft interior.

Scones are relatively simple to make, requiring basic baking ingredients and minimal equipment. They don’t need yeast, so there’s no rising time, making them quicker to prepare than some other baked goods. I hope you enjoy this orange scone recipe! Share your pictures @familyfocusblog!
