Everyone loves a good Asian chicken salad! It has become quite a popular dish at many restaurants so today I have a recipe for Chinese chicken salad with mandarin oranges that is easy to make at home. This recipe is from Chef Katie Chin’s new cookbook: “Everyday Chinese Cookbook: 101 Delicious from Mother’s Kitchen”. For more great every day Chinese food recipes, check out my affiliate link for the 5 star rated cookbook on amazon. She shared this recipe on Home & Family, which airs weekdays at 10 am ET/PT on Hallmark Channel and I received permission to share that with you here. Here are 5 reasons you will love this Chinese chicken salad:

  1. Flavor Combination: The salad typically combines savory, sweet, and tangy flavors, making it a delightful and balanced dish. Ingredients like soy sauce, sesame oil, and rice vinegar create a distinctive and appealing taste.
  2. Texture Variety: It often includes a mix of crunchy vegetables (like cabbage and carrots), tender chicken, and crispy toppings (such as wonton strips or nuts), offering a satisfying contrast in every bite.
  3. Nutritional Balance: Chinese chicken salad is generally a healthy option, providing a good mix of protein from the chicken, fiber from the vegetables, and healthy fats from ingredients like sesame oil and nuts.
  4. Customizability: The salad can be easily customized to fit dietary preferences or available ingredients. You can adjust the level of spiciness, sweetness, or add other components like mandarin oranges or edamame.
  5. Refreshing and Light: It’s a refreshing and light meal, perfect for warmer weather or as a lighter alternative to heavier dishes.

Chin’s Chinese Chicken Salad Dressing Recipe-

First you will make Chin’s chicken salad dressing recipe that is such an integral part of the flavors this dish is known for.

Salad Dressing Ingredients:

  • 1/3 Cup unseasoned rice wine vinegar
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon peeled and minced fresh ginger
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons chili garlic sauce or sambal oelek
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil or canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon dark sesame oil

How To Make Chinese Chicken Salad Dressing:

In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, garlic, ginger, brown sugar and chili garlic sauce. Then add the oils and set aside to let your flavors come together while you prepare the easy recipe for the Chinese salad itself. Alternatively, you can place all the Asian dressing ingredients in a mason jar and shake to mix well.

This dressing can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Give it a good shake or stir before using. You can experiment with adding soy sauce or citrus juice (like orange or lime) for a different flavor profile.

Overall, the Asian salad dressing is a harmonious blend of flavors that complement the fresh, crunchy vegetables and tender chicken in the salad, making each bite exciting and satisfying. It tangy, sweet, spicy, rich and delicious!

How To Make Chinese Chicken Salad:

In a large bowl, combine the romaine lettuce, red cabbage, carrot, green onion, sliced almonds, mandarin orange segments, tender leftover rotisserie chicken, wonton strips, and toasted sesame seeds.

Pour Chinese chicken salad dressing over the salad and toss to combine.

Chinese Chicken Salad With Mandarin Oranges

Serve this easy, healthy Chinese chicken salad immediately. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Substitutions:

In place of rice wine vinegar, you may substitute rice vinegar or white vinegar.

In place of fried wonton strips, you may substitute crunchy noodles or broken up ramen noodles.

You may use Napa cabbage or green cabbage in place of red cabbage but this is not recommended because it does have a different flavor and is not as colorful.

Wow, this is just like the Chin Chin Chinese chicken salad I get at my favorite restaurant in Los Angeles. I love all the fresh ingredients with a fresh hit of ginger in the Asian dressing.

I love this Chin Chinese salad recipe. It came out perfect. I didn’t have fried wanton strips so I just used some of the pre-cooked crunchy chow mein noodles. I thought it was a good substitution.
