You have probably heard by now that there are much more energy efficient light bulbs than there used to be.  You may have noticed that these more energy efficient light bulbs are more expensive though.  And you may be wondering if how much longer they really last and how much energy they really save.  Well, let me tell you exactly why changing you light bulbs to more efficient light bulbs really will save you money and reduce your energy use considerably.

Does Energy Efficient Lighting Really Make A Difference?

CFL light bulbs

According to EnergyStar.gov, “If every American home replaced just one light bulb with a light bulb that’s earned the ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year, save about $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars.”  Wowzer, and those astounding numbers are from just one light bulb.  Our choices really can make a difference!  Yes, changing your light bulbs is worth it!

Do energy efficient light bulbs really save money?

Yes, light bulbs that have earned the energy star rating may cost a bit more but they save you a ton in the long run.  How much money will you save?  Well, an Energy Star qualified light bulb saves about $6 a year in electricity costs and can save more than $40 over its lifetime.

Compared to incandescent light bulbs, ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs*:

  • Use about one-quarter of the energy to produce the same amount of light,
  • Last about 10 times longer,
  • Produce about 75 percent less heat, which reduces cooling costs,

“By replacing your home’s five most frequently used light fixtures or bulbs with models that have earned the ENERGY STAR, you can save $45 each year,” according to energy.gov

Now, it is clear to see that if you haven’t made the switch to eco-friendly LED and CFL bulbs, it is the green thing to do and it will save you money!

Although CFLs are energy-saving, they are not Eco-friendly for several reasons. Mercury content is one of them.

LEDs are much better for the environment.
