We just got back from enjoying deluxe cabins on a Great Smokies KOA holiday. It is the heart of Cherokee tribal country and a gorgeous spot to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains. I was provided with a stay at the The Cherokee Great Smokies KOA in order to facilitate the cabin review. I received no monetary compensation and all opinions expressed are my own. Without hesitation, I can say that it is the perfect spot for a Smoky Mountain vacation with everything from cozy cabins to camping sites to RV sites.
The Cherokee Great Smokies KOA
First, let me say that the Smoky Mountains are a beautiful place to take a vacation. Since I was a child, I have been camping in the Smokies on a regular basis. So much fresh mountain air, beautiful scenery, incredible hikes, and river fun, and big attractions- what’s not to love?!
I love Cherokee, North Carolina too. It has the added benefit of cultural exposure to Native American heritage. So when I had the opportunity experience the Cherokee / Great Smokies KOA for myself, I expected to have a great time at this family-oriented destination set in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. I didn’t know just how nice the Cherokee / Great Smokies KOA Campground itself was till we got there. We had always camped in the Smokies but our campground did not have all the amenities of the Cherokee Great Smokies KOA campground. There are so many exciting activities for the whole family to enjoy at this great base camp.
KOA Campground Cherokee NC Cabin Review
The Cherokee / Great Smokies KOA campground boasts 360-degree views of the mountains and is bordered on one side by the serene Raven Fork River and on the other by three tribal fishing ponds that are stocked with trout twice a week. The tribal trout ponds are such a fun way to catch your dinner without needing to many fishing skills. The cabins line up right along the rushing river for fabulous views out of the cabin windows or from the patio areas that are equipped with fire pits or in the case of the deluxe cabin we stayed in, gas grills.
It was a pretty sweet stay and perfect for a weekend getaway. We didn’t have to worry about packing the tent, and the bed linens, and the cooking stuff, and the dishes, and the dish detergent. It was all provided for us in the deluxe cabin. All we had to do was show up with our clothes, toiletries, stuffed animals, and books!
The deluxe cabin at the Cherokee / Great Smokies KOA had everything! It even had heating and cable TV. It had a nice table for four and a couch to relax on that folded out into a bed. Furthermore it had a bathroom with bathtub and shower. The kitchenette was equipped with dishes, silverware, knives, cutting boards, pots, and other kitchen tools. It had two bedrooms fixed up pretty with bed linens, nightstands and benches to set your stuff out. It was extremely clean and they even had a broom and dustpan so you could keep it tidy during your stay. I loved it!
It was so nice and easy and relaxing. In fact, my husband, who often has problems sleeping was able to just take a huge nap right in the middle of the day while the kids and I entertained ourselves with all the campground amenities.

The Cherokee / Great Smokies KOA had an awesome bounce pad– huge with plenty of room for even me to run and jump and I had tons of fun playing bouncing tag on it with my kids kiddos.
Plus, they had a really nice playground that kids and I played keep away from the bear on (I was the bear!) They loved the life size chess set and made up a game to play called Chess-kers.
We rented a banana bike for an hour- $5- and the kids loved that! We played in the pool and the hot tub too. There were so many family-friendly activities. It is easy to have a full day of fun right at the family campground.
The Cherokee / Great Smokies KOA is the perfect basecamp for area adventures.
It is fun to take a trip into the town of Cherokee, NC, and do some sightseeing and shopping. We visited the Oconaluftee Indian Village which was very interesting to see and my kids loved watching the Native American dances.
I wish we had brought fishing pools because the Cherokee / Great Smokies KOA ponds are stocked with trout, but I didn’t think of it so we missed out on some great fishing!
