One of the best winter sports kids can learn more easily when they are younger is skiing. We did skiing as a family when our kids were growing up as our favorite winter sport. We rented a home in Collingwood for 4 months every year (Dec 1st to March 31st) and we headed up every weekend as well as the Christmas break and March Break. Sometimes we even played hooky from school and work on Fridays and would head up north on Thursday night. 3 days of outdoor fun and family time.
The nicest part of skiing is your kids aren’t sitting in front of the television or hanging out at the malls. Skiing is a social sport … just watch how quickly your kids make friends with other kids on the ski hill!
Everyone can ski at his or her own level. Even though my kids’ ski level has far surpassed mine these days, we still enjoy spending a day together on the slopes. If they want to take a few runs on the moguls, I’ll hit a more intermediate run and then meet them at the bottom of the chairlift. My knees don’t like moguls any more!
At the end of the day when everyone’s tired, there’s nothing more satisfying than enjoying a big pot of homemade chili and watching a good video together. Since everyone’s exhausted by 9 pm, it’s early to bed and because you’re physically tired, everyone sleeps really well. Waking up fresh the next day, you’re ready to hit the slopes nice and early again.
Unfortunately, with my eldest son away at university and my youngest son working for a traveling ski school, we don’t rent the property up north any more. But we still try to find opportunities to enjoy skiing together whenever possible.
Skiing not your winter sport? That’s okay … there’s plenty of other great winter sports kids will love including snowshoeing, snow tubing, dog sledding, tobogganing, skating and cross county skiing. What are you and your family going to do together for fun to survive winter this year?
