My children and I all love to read which is great for expanding vocabulary. As with most kids these days, they also love to spend time playing apps most of which have little educational value. That is why I was so happy to discover the free Words With Friends App that pairs fun word puzzles for kids with teaching vocabulary. This post is brought to you by Zynga. All opinions expressed are my own.

Words With Friends App

This awesome new app combines engaging wordplay with educational features to help 4th through 8th graders learn high-value academic words. I guess you could say it is a #MommyHack.

Words With Friends was named one of the App Store’s Top 10 free games of all time!  The App has new educational features to help students expand vocabulary and spelling skills as they play for success in the classroom and beyond.

Developed in partnership with teachers and education experts, Words With Friends EDU aligns with Common Core Standards and motivates students to increase their exposure to and use of key vocabulary. Words With Friends EDU was tested in over 20 classrooms with more than 2,000 students while in development. Tests have shown that students increase their use and understanding of academic words within the first six gameplay sessions!

Fun Word Puzzles For Kids That Expand Vocabulary

Words With Friends App works through fun word puzzles games for kids. As your kids play, they learn. Now, that is pretty cool. Plus, it is to download on iPad and Android tablets! That is also pretty cool.

So how does it work? Your student can challenge other community members and that is part of what makes it so fun. You are playing against real people so you are even more competitive than you would be with a computer. You take turns creating words with your letter tiles and scoring points for using better words (they can use the word strength meter as a guide).

Parents and students can play together at home for a homework or study experience that extends learning outside the classroom in a fun way.

New Innovative Words With Friends EDU Features:

Power Words– The ability for students to earn bonus points through the use of high-value academic words, including those frequently used in required reading, textbooks and educational assessments.

Definition Hints– Students can use hints to access the definition of the highest-scoring Power Words to meaningfully connect them to academic words and their meanings.

Badges and Avatars– Students earn badges for reaching educational milestones as they play, and each badge unlocks items to let them customize their avatars (which kids seem to love doing!)

Interactive Dashboard– Teachers and parents can track students’ gameplay and learning through a dashboard that measures individual achievements as well as progress against Common Core Standards.
