Matthew 6:34

So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

When thinking of bible verses about parenting responsibilities, this may not have immediately sprung to mind. However, it is a very good bible verse for parents! Consider this your reminder to enjoy the moment with your kids. Yes, you do need to think about their future, but don’t spend so much time worrying about what could be and not enjoying what is. Your kids need you now, in their world, paying attention to them, not always worrying about the future. Take a step back and recognize when you’re missing important moments, memories in the making, and ask yourself what you can teach your child right now, today, about the Kingdom of God that will let them know they are loved and supported.

Philippians 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

This is something all parents need to hear. “Do not be anxious about anything”, that’s easy for Paul to say, right? Not so much. You see, Paul was in prison at the time he wrote this. There’s no doubt he could have been feeling a lot of stress and anxiety. But he goes on to remind us to pray in a spirit of thanksgiving to God. Paul reminds us that in times of stress we need to lay our worries at God’s feet and thank Him for all the times he’s already provided for us.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

This bible verse about parents and child is crystal clear parenting advice. It is a true reminder that the way you parent your child now will have a significant impact on how they turn out as adults. This verse can be a double-edged sword though. It’s comforting advice for parents who are confident about how they’re raising their kids, but discouraging for parents who feel like they’ve made mistakes. It’s never too late though. If you feel you’ve made mistakes, you can take action now to start reversing them and train your child well. Think about the things that are important to you and make sure you are sharing them with your children.

Hebrew 12:10

For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.

We must use discipline in the same way as Him- for our children’s own good. That is what discipline should be all about- teaching children what is right and wrong. Positive discipline should be used in a consistent fashion so that children learn that their actions have consequences and they must think about the results of their actions before they act and not give into easy temptation.

Luke 6:38

Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full.

This is a great bible verse for parents. Sometimes we feel overwhelmed with all we have to do. Schedules to keep up with, family to take care of, and let’s not forget about work. Sometimes we feel we give out so much that we just don’t want to give any more. But our kids give us the best exercise of giving and loving others. Your giving provides a gift for you too. Most importantly, the gift of your child’s love. And the more you love your child and are present for them as children, the more they will be present for you when they grow up.

Hebrew 12:7-11

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Discipline is something each of us must learn and as a parent, it is a tool we must use. Discipline is not about delivering pain or punishment so much as it is about teaching right from wrong. It may seem painful to the child when scold them for not following the rules but is better they learn with the small things now so they may avoid larger transgressions in the future. Discipline is learning that even though something looks good or appealing or fun in the moment, it may not be the best choice which is why we have the commandants and rules to help guide us on the path of righteousness.

Psalm 103:13

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

This bible verse serves as an excellent reminder to parents that we need to show compassion to children when they are trying to do the right thing. When kids understand the rules and they fear being disobedient children to their parents, we can show compassion for their mistakes. Intention matters and the Lord shows us compassion when recognize him as righteous and we ask him to help make us better.

Psalm 127:3-5

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;

To me, this beautiful verse encapsulates exactly how I feel- children are a blessing. And when God has given us such blessings, we would do well to appreciate for them, care for them, and nurture them to the best our ability.

Proverbs 15:20

“A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish man despises his mother.“

This bible verse from the proverbs of Solomon may be slightly confusing at first. The Passion Translation of this is, “When a son learns wisdom, a father’s heart is glad. But the man who shames his mother is a foolish son.” This translation of the Book of Proverbs makes it more clear that is the parents job to impart wisdom through the father’s instruction and them set on the right path in order to have a glad heart. Failure to do so will only result in such child that is foolish and disrespects the voice of his mother.

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, speaking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates, so that as long as the heavens are above the earth, your days and those of your children may be multiplied in the land that the LORD swore to give your fathers.“

It is the parents’ responsibility to teach their children God’s word. We must instill in the heart of a child, love for our Lord Jesus Christ and the works of God. The next generation must learn to follow God’s design.

Colossians 3:21

Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

God’s word reminds us that we must be mindful of our effect on our children. While we need to help them see what is right, we need to remember that motivating them is the most helpful way of accomplishing this. We don’t want them to feel like we don’t see all their positive qualities. Constant expectations and demands without rewards or recognition can drive one to feel angry and discouraged.

1 Peter 5:2-3

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

This is a favorite bible verse because it recognizes the powerful effect a mother’s teaching has on her own household. With the knowledge that we are all children of god, she can help guide her children through wise instruction to pursue godly lives and one day be accepted into the kingdom of God and eternal life.

Exodus 20:12 (Fifth Commandment)

Honor thy father and thy mother.

As we honor our heavenly father, so should our children honor us because a father’s instruction should always be to guide the child to be an instrument of god’s design. If we trust the mighty hand of god we will achieve our own understanding at the proper time. Your father and your mother should always serve as a beacon for what is right try to provide you with guidance according to the word of the Lord your God. This commandment of god offers clear instruction that a good father and mother will deserve for the child to listen to the voice of his father and mother’s teaching.
