DIY Pet Food Storage Bin And Treat Containers

You may have some old canisters sitting around? I had some that I would hate to discard so I came up with this practical reuse idea. This DIY pet project will help you put them to use as a pet food storage bin. If you don’t have a canister handy, you can always head over to your local thrift store and get one for a bargain price. It doesn’t matter what the canister looks like or if it is covered in Christmas designs like my old popcorn tins. Just pick one that is size appropriate for your pet food or pet treats. You can give that out-of-season canister a new look that you will be proud to have sitting out in your home. Follow the provided simple steps to make dog food storage containers or cat treat canisters.

Turn Old Tins Into Cat or Dog Food Storage Containers

I always put away my Christmas popcorn tins in my basement. I usually use them to protect and store my Christmas ornaments. This year I had an extra empty canister and it seemed foolish to store an empty tin that I had no use for. However, I stored it anyway waiting for inspiration to strike. Then I realized that I could recycle my popcorn tins to make great pet food canisters.

My cat is always tearing open the cat food bag in search of fresher food. I finally thought of a trick to stop him.  I reused my popcorn tin as a pet food storage container. The possibilities are endless. You can upcycle a popcorn tin into a dog food storage bin. You can upcycle an old cookie tin into a cat food storage container. And an old tea tin is perfect for small dog or cat treats! The same tutorial applies for all tin shapes.

How To Make DIY Dog Food Storage Container (Good for Cat Food Too):

1.  Select an old canister.

Old tins make the best pet food storage bins because they are generally airtight and will keep the pet food fresh. You can use any size from a small tea canister to a large popcorn tin depending on what you want the canister to hold. You could even choose a few canisters to hold the pet food and pet treats and coordinate the canisters for a cute look. Large popcorn tins are the perfect dog food storage containers!

2.  Paint the canister.

Now is your chance to put those old paint leftovers to use. Browse through your selection and pick a color to cover your canister in.  Say goodbye to brand names and holiday scenes as you give your canister exterior a nice coat of fresh paint. Do not paint the lid. Let the first paint coat dry.  You will probably need to give the canister a second coat of paint depending on the colors you chose and the color of the tin.

3.  Paint the lid exterior.

Chose a second color of paint that you will use for the lid and for the lettering in the next step.  Paint the lid exterior and allow to dry.  Give it a second coat if needed.   Choosing a different color for the lid and the body is optional but it does make it look sharp as well as making it easy for you to know where to grab and open the pet food storage container. Don’t paint the interior of the lid as this will make it difficult to open and close the canister and it will also open up the chance of paint flaking and falling in your pet food which you certainly do not want.

4.  Personalize the canister.

Now you can use the same color paint that you used on the lid to personalize the canister.  You can write anything from, “CAT FOOD”, to “dog bones,”. Alternatively, you can add the animal’s name and a fun image like a paw print or bone.  You may wish to draw a light pencil line onto the can before you get started to help you keep your letters straight.  You may also wish to draw your letters in pencil first or use a stencil to get a more professional look.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoy this easy, DIY dog food storage and cat food storage idea. It is great because it uses materials you probably have on hand already to make something you probably need. I love it when an eco-friendly project saves you money and helps you get organized.

Does your pet try to break into his food or treats?  Do you think you will try this DIY pet food storage containers project to keep your pet food safer and fresher?
