I recently was invited by DreamWorks to attend a special Trolls The Beat Goes On Event at DreamWorks Animation Studio. It was a very unique behind-the-scenes peek at the inner workings of just what goes into the making of an animated series. I will share with you a bit from the DreamWorks Trolls The Beat Goes On producer, voice actors, animation director and producer, and music team. Whether you saw the Trolls blockbuster film or not, you will love this fun animated series that is all about being kind and happy through everyday challenges with really funny results which will be releasing on January 19, 2018.
Sneak Peak Behind The Scenes of DreamWorks Trolls The Beat Goes On Animated Series
Trolls The Beat Goes On Trailer And Clips
First, I was able to watch a Trolls The Beat Goes On trailer and see unreleased clips and I have to say that it is a really cute show. It is the kind of show I would be happy to let little kids watch because it was cute, funny, witty, and focused on problem solving through positivity.
DreamWorks Trolls The Beat Goes On is full of fun uplifting music that makes you want to dance. It is a comedy that reaches the kids but appeals to adults too. I found myself giggling along with the plot. And when I say the humor is sophisticated enough that adults can enjoy it on another level, I don’t mean in a raunchy way because I notice some cartoons do that and I really don’t dig that. Want to see for yourself how cute Trolls The Beat Goes On is? Here is the official trailer:
DreamWorks Trolls The Beat Goes On Talent
Next, we had a DreamWorks Trolls The Beat Goes On introduction session with Matt Beans, the executive producer (known for his previous work on shows like “Robot Chicken” and “Dawn of The Croods”), and Amanda Leighton, the voice of Poppy (known for her work on shows like “This Is Us” and “Make It or Break It”), and Skylar Astin, the voice of Branch (known for his work in movies and shows like “Pitch Perfect” and “Ground Floor”).
Matt Beans talked about the challenge of creating a whole series around positivity and pursuit of fun and filling out the Trolls world enough to see what conflicts may come up and how they would would handle those.
Amanda Leighton Trolls The Beat Goes On
Part of the reason Amanda Leighton was picked for Poppy’s character was because she sounds sweet and kind but she also has a strength that comes through in her voice that is perfect for Poppy.
Skylar Astin
Skylar Astin creates the perfect part curmudgeon and loveable character that makes Brach so funny.
We also got to visit the area where they create the studio recordings for the voices and we had a chance to try that out- I did Poppy’s voice.
It was fun and scary all at once- the pressure I put on myself to get it right was intense but they were so professional and encouraging that it helped!
Art Of DreamWorks Trolls
I loved the behind the scenes peek at DreamWorks Trolls The Beat Goes On art design team. It was super cool to meet Frank Molieri, supervising producer, and Jim Mortensen, supervising director. They shared so much information about the animation process.
Jim Mortensen told us about how the storyboard artists get the script and rough sketch it. They also add postures and extra jokes to create storyboard. Furthermore, he showed us an example of how he might create a story board for a simple joke. It was so cool to see how he brought the joke to life through animation. I was really impressed with that talent to add the unexpected and make something simple more complex and entertaining.
Then these rough drawings are put through pre production, production, and post production to make them “more pretty”. This process gives them a cinematic feel with lots of depth and flow. Frank Molieri uses layers to create depth and color ramps and focus ramps, and color scripts for each song. All of these details work work to bring the characters to life and make their world more 3D.
Music of Trolls The Beat Goes On
Next, we met with Alana Da Fonseca, executive music producer, and Alex Geringas, composer. The DreamWorks Trolls The Beat Goes On music session was really fun to learn about. These two were brimming with talent and energy. I could certainly see how they write so many dance inspiring songs!
Alex Geringas said, “I begin building the music with the percussion first till I am dancing, till I get goosebumps.”
Alana Da Fonseca said, “it is about always bringing better than you even thought you could.”
And I must say, that was the most consistent thread as I heard each person at DreamWorks explain their job. They all had an infectious passion and drive to create an amazing product! It was really inspirational just to hear them each talk.
The DreamWorks Trolls The Beat Goes On event was wrapped up with an amazing DreamWorks Trolls Party. I am going to share that with you in a separate post. I think you will want all the Trolls party theme details so you can recreate some of the magic at Trolls birthday parties for your kids! You can see me with Branch and Poppy on Instagram #DWTrollsTV.
