Here’s a fun and simple Valentine’s Day craft that kids will love helping make and a bonus…this heart suncatcher will add some fun decoration to their room! There are all kind of paper sun light catchers that can be made. We made some patriotic ones this past summer for the 4th of July! This Heart Suncatcher Craft Banner can be customized to your favorite colors and sizes. They all seem to come out pretty unique. You more than likely already have everything that you need to get started!

Heart Suncatcher Craft Banner Tutorial

First let’s discuss- what is a suncatcher? A suncatcher is a decorative object typically made from colored glass, plastic, or other translucent materials such as tissue paper, designed to capture and reflect sunlight. When hung in a sunny window or outdoor space, a suncatcher allows light to shine through, creating a beautiful display of colors and patterns. Suncatchers can come in various shapes, sizes, and designs, ranging from simple geometric patterns to intricate images of animals, flowers, or other motifs. They are often used as ornaments to add a touch of beauty and brightness to a room or garden.

Heart Sun Catcher Craft Supplies Needed:

  • Construction Paper (for making your heart frame)
  • Tissue Paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape (or glue stick)
  • Plastic sandwich bag
  • Pen
  • Free heart template or cookie cutters (optional)
  • Twine/Cord

Directions For How To Make Heart Suncatchers:

Grab your supplies and head to a flat surface. If your kids are joining in, grab seats around the table! Start by tracing out several hearts on your construction paper. You can freehand the heart shape and make it a large heart or a small heart. If you like a more perfectly symmetrical look, you can use a cookie cutter like we did. Or you can use a free printable heart template.

Your garland can be as long as you would like for it to be. We stuck with 5 small size hearts. Once you have drawn your heart outlines, cut them out.

Next, grab your plastic bag. Trace around your cut out hearts onto the plastic bag.

Cut out your plastic hearts and tape them to the back of your construction paper hearts. You can use double-sided tape for this, if you have it.

Next, take your tissue paper and tear it into small pieces. I used what we had which was just plain white tissue paper. However, feel free to use an assortment of colorful tissue paper for a stained glass heart suncatcher, if you prefer. The tissue paper pieces do not have to be all the same size. Flip your heart over where the back is facing up and cover the plastic with your tissue paper taping down pieces as you go.

Once you have covered all of your plastic, tape your hearts to your twine and you have your own Heart Suncatcher Craft Banner! Hang up in a window and watch the sunlight come through the center of the hearts.

Conclusion

Making a heart suncatcher with your kiddos is about so much more than a cute finished craft. It’s a chance to slow down, connect, and create something together while building fine motor skills, creativity, and confidence along the way. As the light shines through their colorful designs, it becomes a sweet reminder of shared time, teamwork, and love—something your kids will feel proud to see hanging in the window long after the glue has dried.

Creating tissue paper heart suncatchers is a fun and easy craft that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. Hang your tissue paper heart suncatcher in a window where it can catch the light. Have you ever made sun light catchers? This fun and easy suncatcher craft is a kid favorite! Heart crafts are always popular. You may also enjoy making a washi tape heart banner.  You can use them both to decorate different rooms or different areas of the same room for Valentine’s Day or an anniversary!

This tissue paper stained glass craft is also really fun and a great sun catcher. Try them all and let me know your favorite on social media @familyfocusblog!
