This fun, easy craft for you to do with your children is a great way to add a touch of spring to your home. It makes great spring door swag or can be used as a spring flower garland for your mantel or windows. We used some cute flower shaped cookie cutters to create the shapes we cut out but you can free hand your flowers or even use any spring shapes you have on hand. Choosing the colors, and whether or not to layer the foam flowers really makes this flower art craft very customizable to match any room’s decor. The cool thing about not using fresh flowers for this craft is that you don’t have to worry about the artificial garlands wilting. They stay pretty and can be used in new ways for an event theme or a special day.
Faux Floral Garland Tutorial
Making flower garlands can be a fun and creative activity! Flower garlands are often used to decorate homes, events, and special occasions like weddings, parties, and festivals. They are a common part of many cultural and religious celebrations, symbolizing beauty, joy, and prosperity. Furthermore, for those who enjoy crafting, making flower garlands can be a relaxing and fulfilling creative activity.
Working with fresh flowers can provide a sense of connection to nature, which can be grounding and uplifting. Some people believe that the scent of fresh flowers can have a calming or mood-lifting effect, making garlands a way to bring natural fragrance indoors. As much as I love fresh flowers, I dislike picking them because I don’t want them to dry up and die too soon. Therefore this flower garland craft uses craft foam and pompoms to make the flowers.
First clear off a working space and then collect your flower art craft supplies. Here is what you will need for this flower making craft.
Craft Supplies:
- Flower cookie cutter
- Colorful twine or yarn
- Pom poms
- Craft foam sheets, various colors (available at your local craft store or use my affiliate amazon link.)
- Hot glue gun & hot glue sticks
- Scissors
How To Make Flower Garlands:
Making flower garlands can be a beautiful way to celebrate, create, and connect with nature and traditions. Let’s get started!
Cut Yarn
Decide how long you would like your spring door swag and/or spring floral garland to be by measuring the width of the door, window, etc and then adding about 6 inches to that so that you will have extra on both ends for hanging. Cut your twine/yarn to that length.
Foam Flowers Craft
Show your child how to press the cookie cutter into the craft foam firmly to impress the shape into it. The harder you press the easier the line will be to follow. You can make them all with the same flower shape or mix and match with other cookie cutters. Cut out along the impression to cut your flower out, smaller scissors make it easier.
Add Pom Poms
Glue a pom pom to the center of each craft foam flower. You can use craft glue so that your child can take the lead in the project but it will take longer to dry before you can hang it up and they tend to fall off easier. Using a drop of hot glue works faster and better but you will need to use safety tips and make sure your child realizes it is a burn hazard to steer clear of unless they are old enough and are supervised after a lesson.
Layer Flowers
May chose to layer the garland flowers. If you do so, you will just need to glue a smaller completed flower (in other words, pom pom center secured) onto a larger craft foam only flower. You can also choose to use a permanent marker to decorate the flowers further. I chose to keep the simple look with my flower garland but you can get as fancy as you like with artificial floral garlands.
Add Flowers To Yarn
Once you have all the flowers you need for your garland, you can begin to glue them to your twine. I recommend using hot glue to secure your flowers to the string as it dries quicker and is a more solid adhesive than craft glue. About every four inches makes a nice distance but that can be varied to suit the size of your flowers as well.
Now, you have learned how to make a flower garland with craft foam flowers. Your flower garland is now ready to hang or display! You can hang it on a wall, drape it along a table, or use it as a decorative accent for a special event. Your spring door swag is ready, hang it up and enjoy.
Conclusion
Flower crafts are just so pretty and fun! Making a DIY flower garland is a wonderful way to add a touch of spring beauty to your home decor or special event. I hope you have fun with this simple foam flower making craft and enjoy your spring flower garland craft. Where will you hang your spring floral door swags?
