The U.S. Virgin Islands have always sounded like a tropical paradise to me. Renowned for beautiful beaches, tropical flora and fauna, and amazing snorkeling, I have always wanted to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) so I am excited to tell you, I just got back from my first trip USVI. It is the choice destination of many a honeymooners (in fact, my parents had their honeymoon there and the couple on the plane next to me did too!) The U.S. Virgin Islands are also a great family vacation destination with so much to do in St. Croix and there is no passport required (for U.S. citizens) to visit this breath taking, slightly exotic destination. My husband and I stayed at the Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort, quite possibly the best resort in St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands.
For my first trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands, I was lucky enough to be hosted by the United States Virgin Islands Department of Tourism and its fantastic PR team. I was also lucky enough to visit the St. Croix island, which is, as my informative driver, Ames Joseph, told me, “the biggest, the prettiest, and the best!” I have no frame of reference since I did not visit the other US Virgin Islands yet but I can tell you that I loved St. Croix so much I am thinking about buying some land there!
The Buccaneer Resort In St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands
I stayed at The Buccaneer Resort in St. Croix, USVI. I can’t utter one complaint as this luxury resort was seriously amazing. In fact, when trying to write this review of the Buccaneer Resort, I was overwhelmed by having to choose from so many beautiful photos that I took of views, amenities, and the resort accommodations themselves.
The Buccaneer Resort is the perfect resort choice for couples and families. It has all the beauty and romance a couple could desire and all the kid friendly amenities a family could desire. I can tell you that a whole USVI vacation could be spent on The Buccaneer Resort property and you would have an amazing time without leaving because the grounds are amazing and they have so many entertainment options on their daily schedules. I can also tell you that as tempting as this may be, you should go explore the island of St. Croix as well, because it too is full of wonderful sights and history!
Things To Do That Makes It The Best Resort In St. Croix
I attended a welcome reception for hotel guests at the old Sugar Mill (a real sugar mill that was built in the 1750s) next to the main house. There were cocktails and drinks for kids as well as some appetizers. There was also live music (steel drums) and moko jumbie. It was a beautiful welcome to the US Virgin Island resort. We enjoyed the warm hospitality and ocean views.
Other fun items on their “Week at a Glance” are Kids’ Camp from 9-4 every day, Family Treasure Hunt, Crab Race, Golf lessons (extra fee), Art Lessons (extra fee), Touch Football, Frisbee Golf, Paddle Board Classes, tennis clinic (extra fee), and more. They also have kayaks, and snorkel gear that you can borrow and explore The Buccaneer’s close by reefs. Make sure you don’t touch any coral- touching coral can kill it! I am lucky enough to have snorkeled in many beautiful spots, but right off of The Buccaneer’s Mermaid Beach, was the first time in my life I encountered a sea turtle while snorkeling. The endangered hawksbill sea turtle turned to look at me and seemed to wonder what I wanted. It was a moment I will always remember. Magical.

Buccaneer Resort St Croix U.S. Virgin Islands offers several different room accommodations so you can choose the one that is right for our family needs and budget.
From ocean view rooms in the Historic Great House to ocean view Family Cottage Suites to specialty suites by the Grotto pool and beach- there is something for everyone whether you want a luxurious room or a home away from home! Each room features a private patio or balcony with spectacular views. Buccaneer guests will be delighted by the deluxe ocean front room options.
I want to highlight the ocean view Family Cottage Suites because they are so perfect for many of my readers. These suites come with a master bedroom that adjoins a second kids bedroom with one bathroom between them. The master bedroom has a king bed and a twin size window seat. The second bed room is done with a cute sea theme for kids and has two twin beds as well as a pull-out trundle. These rooms are perfect for families with several children under 12 and they door to the outside of the children’s room has a bell that sounds in the parents room when opened in case those kiddos forget to ask before stepping outside.
Check out the view from my oceanfront room at Buccaneer Resort! I stayed in an Oceanfront room. They are perched above the shore between Grotto and Mermaid Beach. Mine was right on the Mermaid Beach side and it was a beautiful view as well as very convenient distance to the beach. I absolutely loved the distinctive 16-foot high wood ceilings and the large picture window. Each room has a desk, table with chairs for two, and a stone patio that fronts the sea below. This room had two queen beds so it would be perfect for small families like mine. These rooms offer the advantage of optionally connecting to another to accommodate larger families.
Don’t you just love this outdoor pool with jaw-dropping views of the Caribbean sea? The historic Buccaneer is one of the top beach resorts I have been to and I love the sound of ocean waves all over the property.

Places To Eat At The Buccaneer Resort, US Virgin Islands
I love eating on the beach! #STCroix A photo posted by Family Focus (@familyfocusblog) on
Mermaid Restaurant
We ate at the Mermaid Restaurant which is located beach-side, with an extensive lunch menu of savory soups, fresh jumbo salads, grilled burgers, fresh fish, sandwiches and daily specials. The Mermaid bar offers frozen cocktails and virgin frozen drinks as well.
Kendrick’s at The Buccaneer
You will love Kendrick’s at The Buccaneer! This popular St. Croix restaurant recently made its move from downtown Christiansted to the Buccaneer. Kendrick’s at The Buccaneer offers covered, open-air dining with amazing views of the Caribbean Sea and Christiansted Harbor. The Wine Spectator award-winning restaurant features classical cuisine with Caribbean accents. I was told by one local, “You will not have a bad meal,” and in fact, everything was cooked to perfection.
Conclusion
I am certain that you will enjoy The Buccaneer Resort accommodations, grounds, amenities, food, and the staff. My husband and I certainly did! So get ready for the beautiful weather of the U.S. Virgin Islands and unwind in this luxurious, historical St. Croix paradise resort.

One last thing, if you are wondering, “Is St Croix safe for tourists?” We felt absolutely safe. Everyone we met was super friendly and I would rate it one of the safest places I have visited as a tourists. As a woman, I would say take the same safety precautions you would anywhere but St. Croix is very tourist friendly.
